Just a reminder: Brenda's grandfather told the House of Lords if they didn't give up the veto he'd just spam new Lords until they did so. I mention this because I'm a historian of the Edwardian era and it's always amused me how badly the Tories read the room about the People's Budget.

The British Left won in a landslide in 1906 because Balfour decided to be too clever by half and let Campbell-Bannerman into No. 10 in the hopes the Radicals and the Liberal Imperialists would destroy each other in a minority government. Parliamentary Labour might owe its existence to Balfour's bad judgement because they were carried into office alongside the Liberals, going from a two MPs to 29. Or that a Liberal would be a canny political operator who completely loving wrecked their cunning plans to sabotage him

Campbell-Bannerman was really something of an Edwardian Jeremy Corbyn, right down to surviving an attempted backbench revolt in late 1905. 1930s Labour leader George Lansbury described him as "not afraid of the word Socialism, and [he] did believe unemployment was a national problem and the unemployed the care of the State." It's a tragedy he died in 1908 instead of a few years later. He even managed to have a mostly-competent defence policy, mostly because he listened to Jackie Fisher instead of the War Office.
