It’s an annoyance by a thousand cuts thing. Like how heating them constantly say “did you know boyhood took twelve years to make?” was super annoying as someone who never heard anyone say that before them

I guess Nebula/Curiosity Stream rented out a space for Youtubers to make some videos together? Hbomb made a little cameo in the background of the latest Patrick Willems video and Willems tweeted that the Legal Eagle video Hbomb was a part of was filmed the following day (that might have been a joke, I'm kind of stupid).

I'm considering checking out Nebula, since Curiosity Stream seems to be pretty affordable. The selection, at least in Willems' ad, suggests there's some care in their curation from inception. I recall that was one of the points Dan Olson made in his Vidme video.

It's fine.
One of Tlj defenses is how "subversive" it is so if you were put on the map by star wars reviews and reviewing Gremlins 2 it's a good idea to bring up why that movie works and the other movie does not.

At risk of Star Wars arguing: I love The Last Jedi, I don't think I've heard anyone use the word "subversive" to praise it literally since it came out. And the point is that literally everyone is tired of The Last Jedi discourse.

I'm not gonna argue that 'subverting expectations' gets too overused but please don't tell me this video has the Chernobyl level take of 'actually by having the character named Darth Traya betray you they WERE subverting expectations by NOT subverting them' because that's also not what that is

It doesn't. Daniel talks about how subversions only work if they are playing off of the original stories' structures, not based off of fan theories or assumptions with no grounding in the setting. Stories like Deep Space Nine and Kotor only work because they have the baseline of Star Trek/TNG and the original films to contrast against. People expect a certain type of story from these media franchises and a proper subversion has to engage with the elements of these stories in order to be effective.

alright then, I just saw the thumbnail and instantly had an image of the same boring rear end 'actually doing the trope is subverting the trope' takes I've seen before. Sounds like a neat listen then.

"Correctly" is a loving useless term when applied to the idea of subverting something.

Also not everyone has the same expectations so a lot of the time it comes down to "the film didn't do what I expected it to do so its bad". All TLJ really did was brush off a bunch of boring poo poo that JJ set up to never pay off and thats apparently the worse thing ever.

There's no one I'd rather be than me.

SO I guess the big thing with Lidsay's video for me is how do you reconcile your love for stuff that is/now is owned by Disney.

Like, me and my family are going to Disney World next summer. I really wanna go. I wanna see Galaxy's Edge and whatever the hell Belle's Castle is. Im excited. Im amped to go. Me and my family love Disney poo poo. But how do I enjoy the absolutely most Disney poo poo out there but still remembering that place wants to swallow the entirety of the US media industry and feeling like a giant scab.

Also, When the Peter Pan live action remake comes around, im obligated to see that cause...It's my fave Disney movie and yeah...How does Disney woke that?

It would be there whether you went or not. If you think you’ll enjoy it, go and have fun. It seems like the employees actually like being in character.

Saberspark, an animation reviewer, did a review of the 70s animated porno Once Upon a Girl:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lmRydJ2Dlno

He went way out of his way to keep the video SFW (he censored pretty much all of the actual content and mainly focused on the cultural context the enabled something like that to be made in the first place and the people behind it) but Youtube demonetized it anyways. So he put together a second video focused on the actual content of the film and put it on Pornhub (very :nws:, both the site and video). It's such a weird cultural artifact that I think both videos are worth watching.

Lindsay has a few big points

-The remakes use popular talking points from the old movies to make them feel relevant and like they have a reason to exist.
-The remakes throw in “woke” bits, usually neoliberal feminist stuff, to try and reconcile with the older movie. Even if it doesn’t really make sense within the context of the original
-however, the remakes don’t address more substantive issues. The feminism is very surface level, and the troublesome stuff of the old movies concerning race is simply excised and not addressed in any way
-finally, the movies fleeting woke moments don’t touch on why these problems exist. Issues like sexism or corrupt businessmen don’t point at the system that birthed these problems. Patriarchy and capitalism are simply ignored and a villain shoulders all the burden.

Also shallow criticism is something of a bugbear to lindsay, and she brings it up here. Saying something is bad because it did a problematic thing isn’t useful on its own. Much like how Disney hides racist elements of its past in the remakes, saying “thing bad because it did a racism” and leaving it at that is refusing to dissect the work and understand why this kind of thing happens.
