Saberspark, an animation reviewer, did a review of the 70s animated porno Once Upon a Girl:

He went way out of his way to keep the video SFW (he censored pretty much all of the actual content and mainly focused on the cultural context the enabled something like that to be made in the first place and the people behind it) but Youtube demonetized it anyways. So he put together a second video focused on the actual content of the film and put it on Pornhub (very :nws:, both the site and video). It's such a weird cultural artifact that I think both videos are worth watching.

yeah. i heard of that before from another reviewer. but i didn't know how BIG the movie was in animated history. i mean a loving frog eats a girl out while a kid gets his dick bit by a squirrel.

What is Saberspark's magical power in that he reviews movies that nobody is thinking about yet gets half a million views each time?

I can't speak for anyone else, but I really like that he isn't playing a character, both he and his audience just really like seeking out these odd obscure movies.

Because of that he comes across as earnest, so while he points out the things he hates about a movie he always gives credit where credit is due.
And he quite often ends up genuinely liking the movies he reviews, so he'll dig up a movie about a child discovering his dad is bigfoot, and end the review by saying he actually found the movie to be pretty fun.

Honestly, after a decade of grown men pretending to be angry at children's cartoons, and a few years of grown men actually being angry at children's cartoons, seeing a guy watch a movie featuring a talking corgi and Donald Trump and saying it's not half bad is refreshing.

I haven't watched a lot of SaberSpark's stuff, but apart from having thumbnails that could maybe be considered clickbait, his focus on oddities like corgi Trump movie and the like does seem to be the draw to his channel. He's also one of the few people who I think tends to focus mainly on western animation (the only others one I can think of being RebelTaxi and MarsReview).

Dapper_Swindler posted:

I think to some degree, it just comes down to being genuine. You don't have to feign anger or make skits, or discuss deviations from the typical three-act structure, or the failure to tackle the topic of the military-industrial complex, or whatever. For the most part, people will reciprocate well to you just sitting down and talking about a film/game/book and just saying, "Here's this thing and what I thought of it." Granted, you can do some of the aforementioned things and still make a good critique, but it's not really necessary.

I’m not sure I understand the problem people have with Disney in this thread. I mean sure, they’ve made a few bad remakes recently but that shouldn’t affect your enjoyment of the originals, or the parks or anything else they happen to own. Even Lindsay didn’t seem that bothered outside of the issues she had with those specific films. I don't know why anyone would expect her to want to “destroy” Disney, whatever that means.

in real world, Disney have massive sway on the copyright law, making it benefit mostly Disney and the other corporate holders

and in general people don't like the current approach of Disney milking their vault dry and making everyhting they touch (and they absorb loving everything) into samey dull entertainment mash

Well, yeah, I agree that those live-action remakes are lame cash-grabs but they do other stuff as well. And every big studio puts out its share of dumb blockbusters.

Twincityhacker

Not entirely samey mash, since a few things made has given the internet a collective case of angries - TLJ for instance.

Though I'm not sure if it's a super new problem? The hell conglomeration, yes, but we have not reached peak sameness like with cowboy movies with over 200 pictures of cowboy movies per year.

EDIT: I agree that "copyright law" is the big evil that Disney is pushing outside lovely labor practices.

They are nearing monopoly status and have a long history of breaking unions and exploiting workers. It’s not good for them to control such a large segment of the market.

I've seen some people recommend OneyPlays in this thread a few times. They are really good comedians, but they are also to homophobia what Trudeau is to blackface: they just cannot stop doing it. It feels like every five minutes they call something "gay" or "faggy". I've also seen them do not one, but two extended skits where the entire joke is that a character calls someone "human being" over and over again.

Not a fan.

Monopolies are dangerous. Cultural monopolies doubly so. Between, Star Wars, Marvel and their Fairy Tails, Disney basically owns childhood entertainment.

The influence they have over movie theaters is also pretty fearsome. Somebody somewhere made a joke recently that movies are going to be called "Disneys" in the future and that is actually a real possibility.

I think this kind of dumb internet edginess they traffic in is what drove the divide between Chris/Oney and Arin/Game Grumps a while back when the storytime animators """"""parody"""""" was a source of controversy. Arin has made a great effort to evolve with the times and try to make comedy that doesn't ridicule disadvantaged groups, and Oney thinks that becoming a better person means that you've "lost your sense of humor".

Because the only way to be funny is to say slurs and encourage people being mocked, apparently.
