I know this was meant in a sarcastic manner but it is precisely why they fight so hard to be called anything but nazis. They know the public opinion will turn on them super quick and they will lose every bit of power and control they currently enjoy the second the association sticks because to the majority of people the nazis were the most evil people in history.

Not to go all hoo rah Canada because we're totally going to sell them our resources cheap, like we've always done, but the USA invading Canada would be extremely interesting because we would start a guerilla/terrorist campaign on their own soil so fast. They wouldn't have the stomachache for it. We'll be a puppet state, but we we'll always retain at least the illusion of sovereignty.

That's why Canada would remain a client state, or a territory like Puerto Rico -- in this hypothetical situation America wouldn't risk an additional 37+ million pro-public healthcare voters to suddenly crash their politics, no matter how dysfunctional they are at that point.
