I want to talk about Stoneblade with y’all. Specifically, this Stoneblade: https://www.mtgtop8.com/event?e=23015&d=357817&f=MO I love it and it feels super good and fun to play! You run tons of solid disruption creatures while still presenting a quick clock when you need to thanks to the Forge and you have an endless stream of card advantage. I want to run it in a 4K next weekend but won’t have a ton of time to get reps in so I want to try to figure out what matchups are like for it before then. Looking at the list it’s easy enough to identify a few potential weakness decks, specifically Urza and Tron where I count 10 separate cards that get brought in from the board. Burn also seems potentially problematic. What other decklists might pose a problem for it? The creature suite is very soft to Bolt so I could see that being a problem as well. Playing it last night in a typical Thursday night modern setting I beat Jund twice (matchup feels pretty great), Ad Naus and 4CC Whirza. I think it’s really solid for grinding games out but I didn’t get much chance to see what the combo matchups are like for it. Is coco actually good in the deck? It seems like you already have so much card advantage in the deck and so wouldn't be super essential.

I found grabbing disruption creatures at instant speed pretty helpful last night, it’s mainly good for quickly re-establishing a board presence. It could easily be Tefs and/or Jaces but I’m not sure what that gains me when a large portion of the deck already either allows for reactive play at instant speed or heavily facilitates it.

I just got my playset of Ranger-Captains, and being able to search up Step-Moms and Shadows seems so loving good. I'd probably limit the red splash to just K-command and a single Battle Rage and cut back on the Pushes for a set of Paths, though.

Posting this here, too: trying to decide between UW and Bant Stoneblade for an Open tomorrow in Modern. I'd like to hear people's thoughts on those decks, I know UW's got the better record overall, it seems like the more consistent option but Bant is powerful in it's own right and I really like a lot of the cards played in Bant shells.

My 4/0 FNMs records are almost exclusively the result of day before or, just as often, day of second guessing. I don't think I've ever brought a new deck for the first time and not 4/0d.

That being said, I do think UW is better positioned right now based on how hard people are leaning into Stoneforge packages. Every week it is going to be harder for Stoneforge to win and UW does super well against the counterpick, Jund.

In the long term I'm more excited about SFM outside of midrange and control decks. Getting cranial plating or sword of the meek, or using the card to replace duskwatch recruiter as a mana sink in druid decks (with viridian longbow) all seem to be good ways to go.

Well I went 4-3 drop in Atlanta. I probably would have played out the last round just because why not, but I used the time to get the Mox Sapphire I wanted so the weekend wasn't a total bust. We decided to bail on tomorrow and just head home early so we aren't getting in at like 2am if we stayed for the day (it's a 7.5 hour drive...). I'm getting too old to do these events.

It's more that I just can't be around your average magic player (especially so many of them) for this long anymore. Showing up at 9am, somewhere around 2pm I just want to leave and not see another human being and I just start thinking about all the things I could have been doing back home instead. Combine that with not sleeping enough, eating like crap, and facing a full week before I get a weekend to recover, and it makes me wonder why I do this to myself. That said, I'll completely forget this when I go to another one in a few months and the cycle begins again.

This is the current Faeries list I'm on. Any advice or recommendations? I'm unsure about the Jaces - I like having them for grindy matchups but at the same time a lot of the grindy decks are either blue, where it's hard to cast with a reasonable amount of mana, or Jund, where we're going to lose regardless because of W&6. I've also tried an Esper build with SFM but the mana isn't the best so idk.

I'm looking at getting into legacy and was told modifying one of my modern decks is a bad idea. That manaless dredge list looks cheap and loads of fun. How does it deal with leylines and rest in peace though? Are they not playing in legacy?

The idea of a deck that wants to be on the draw and staring down a tormod's crypt or T2 rest in peace when it comes time to dredge scares me off. Why are leylines bad in legacy?

In Modern, the chance of a particular sideboard card being in your opening hand is big compared to the chance of it not being in your opener, but you drawing it early enough to matter. So in an objective sense, leylines are quite good at getting on the board early and hindering your opponent, compared to the other cards in the format you could be running. In Legacy, there's so much cantripping and card selection in the format that it's the other way around - you're more likely to find a particular card during the game than you are to see it in your opening hand. So you want cards that are impactful when you draw them, rather than cards that cost 4 mana and are unplayable.

Play 'em. If people want to know what stuff does, they can ask. I had one guy whine once about how unfair it is to play foreign cards and blah blah blah, if anyone ever plays foreign cards against me I'm going to call a judge and get the oracle text on every card they play. Basically "we're in 'Murica, your cards should speak 'Murican." He's also a huge moron. I played against a guy once who said something to the effect of "you might want to buy English versions of the cards so people can read them." He said this while playing his 75 card, unsleeved, mono-red deck featuring powerhouses such as viashino sandstalker and goblin balloon brigade. In legacy.

Just lol if you don’t know what all 15k cards do without having to read them. I still get really happy when people read my German Vendilion Clique. The name in German is Vendilion-Clique so people assume it’s the English version and get about 5 words into reading the text box before getting a really confused look on their face that never fails to make me chuckle.

Shout out to Chalice on one completely carrying me through an entire game where I forgot Ugin lowered coloured mana costs by 2 because my card was in Japanese lmfao 3-1, beat some UW stoneblade deck, some 5c Tribal Flames pile, and Infect, lost to spirits.

Having a better knowledge of the card pool is a fair advantage, especially in eternal formats. I don’t really care if you can read my cards, you can ask a judge for the oracle text literally any time. Or I will tell you, and truthfully.

To be clear, in the rules back then, it was still "play" spells, not "cast" them. Eventually they realized it was confusing to have play mean so many different things (they also used "in play"), so they started using the terms "battlefield" and "cast."
