PantsOptional posted:Once you strip away the clever-seeming dialogue style, the actual writing of the show seems questionable, and thus the politics espoused in the show as well. The episode that nearly gave Dave a coronary involved a trade bill amendment that had strong bipartisan support but was, according to the show, going to be completely killed over an amendment against child slavery. yea under all the flowery bullshit the actual political elements of the show are dogshit. It's constantly based around the fantastical 'you know it's a compromise if everyone's unhappy' nonsense, so the actual legislation that gets passed is often insane budget balances by way of social safety net cuts or gun control by way of actually not doing gun control at all or whatever. You can't even have your protagonists win in anything but symbolic things. It becomes extremely distasteful in the wake of most of us losing our Obama nostalgia when we see that the actual governance he did exactly like that was poo poo that I'm sure fake president Martin Sheen would love like 'ok we'll do healthcare reform...but no public option' or him literally offering up gutting social security as a 'grand bargain' that only got avoided when the republicans couldn't even give him that terrible win. Like, we had the Sorkin president and it turns out he did near nothing but let the republicans eat his lunch and call him a commie terrorist lover for not putting the right garnish on it. West Wing was always a fantasy but it's become pretty unpleasent to watch in modern contexts

West Wing was Clintonian "end of history" fanfic playing out as the GOP Executive branch in the real world took us to war with Iraq and framed questioning the motivation for essentially delivering a trillion dollars directly to Halliburton as "unpatriotic"

^ The West Wing Thing. There was a savage article politically reviewing The West Wing that pointed out that Sheen's presidency didn't actually accomplish anything. He gave up a chance to own the Supreme Court. There were no apparent foreign policy victories. The only landmark piece of legislation is a vague "Homeless" bill, and the conceit of the show is that they have a supermajority and an insane voter mandate (with some ridiculous electoral college map). The point was that even in what's essentially neoliberal/centrist/"debate me" porn they didn't actually achieve anything. Even in dream fiction they're worthless, oppressed failures. Probably some corollary to the religious right and their oppression porn genre of films.

Parakeet vs. Phone posted:^ The West Wing Thing. oh god I forgot that the show literally involves president sheen winning a Reagan-esque massive electoral mandate with massive coattails yet still not doing poo poo. That 'they can't even win in their fantasies' thing is so true though. I remember early in the Trump presidency there was some Clinton toadie who made some dumb 'meanwhile in the reality where Clinton won she's signing a bipartisan compromise on immigration' post and it was just so sad. Even in a literal alternate reality they can't just win outright because their ideal form is everyone sitting down and shaking hands, if one person is unhappy everything has to stop. sexpig by night fucked around with this message at 23:17 on Oct 3, 2019 |

My biggest exposure to the West Wing is from the episode of Citation Needed and the description of the episode that had Modern Day McGovern as the dangerous left-wing voice trying to drag the Democrats away from bipartisanship was loving insane

AceOfFlames posted:I never watched the West Wing but am I correct in assuming that people hate it now because they blame the show for making politicians think they can simply debate everything calmly like civilized people instead of screaming at each other and that no longer applies? You know the Crooked Media guys? They've openly stated that their desire to get into politics, and the way they comported themselves in the Obama administration, was inspired by the West Wing. So read into that what you will.

Oh dear. Just noticed the title of the latest Dollop. I have heard of this event (though haven't seen the movies made about it). I'm guessing there's going to be a huge extended period where they rightly point out that if that happened today, the students would keep going once the "twist" was revealed, still think it was awesome and kick the teacher to the curb. Edit: huh, there wasn't. I still think that would totally happen though. AceOfFlames fucked around with this message at 12:16 on Oct 8, 2019 |

The TV movie is what they made us watch while they deliberated over how to tell us that the World Trade Center towers were destroyed. I thought the movie was cheesy, but I also didn't know it was based on an actual event. Less than a week to turn kids into rabid fascists. Cool.

I just switched from iPhone to Google Pixel. Anyone know how I can get the Patreon-only episodes in my Google Podcasts app? edit: Welp, answered my own question. In case anyone else is curious, Google Podcasts doesn't support private RSS feeds so you need to download a third-party podcast player.
