This is usually true, but if you've got personal item + carry-on + garment bag and you happen to hit it when gate agents and management are annoyed at each other, at least American Airlines gate agents have figured out that being strict on garment bags is a good way to get business travelers to yell at corporate. Have had a couple of times (not super recently) where they've just gone down the line screwing people over. So it'll work like 99% of the time, but have a backup plan.

Be prepared to break the personal item down into the other two bags, they only care how many bags you bring on, not how many you have once you’re on.

Any recommendations for good eats or drinks in PHX or Tuscon? I've actually never been funnily enough.

This trip will swing me into Spire Elite with IHG this year.

I cannot drink in college or sports bars.

Dive bars or upscale dive bars. Or just the hotel bar.

Hell yeah, 7A, best poverty spec seat on this entirely uneventful ARL-CPH.

Spent four nights in Uppsala, just north of Stockholm. Not a bad little university town, good food choices and hotel ain’t bad. Happy to be going home though.

There should be a Diamond+ for people that qualify for DM more than one way, but are not quite 360 level.

Oh, almost forgot. On my morning flight CPH-ARL the aircraft just came in from Stockholm with a load of passengers, and some lady walked around the boarding passengers asking if someone was traveling (back) to downtown Stockholm. Apparently she had brought a MacBook which shouldn’t have been, and she needed someone to take it back. A younger girl obliged, but a middle aged lady came up to her and said that it wasn’t quite kosher. Once boarded and seated, the crew called for the person carrying said laptop to make herself known, and the laptop didn’t make the flight.

I’m a little torn because on one hand, we were inside security, so in theory everything should be fine, on the other hand, “can you bring this wrapped gift to my cousin?” is the mother of all smuggling/bomb schemes.

"I'm carrying it for not a friend" doesn't seem like a great alibi when the cops find child porn on the hard drive.

Fyi, the Chase points transfer at a 1 to 1 rate to IHG and are qualifying for status.

i just qualified spire elite ahead of schedule cause i was like 10k points off booking a hotel for vacation and found the option while i was pursuing my rewards portal.

Not sure if it's effective but if your near a tear or a bit short its nice.

Also i really liked phoneix i thought it was gunna be suburban hellsprawl similar to houston and it was a little but i had a grand old time and there are some amazing happy hour and cocktail scenes.

Yes literally. if you dump chase points into your IHG account through their rewards portal they are qualifying. Spire Elite is like 70 nights 75k points or something stupid and I was a few points short of a hotel i wanted to book and so i dumped a few and it qualified me.

I think Platinum is like 25k points which puts you at auto room upgrades and stuff so maybe not a bad deal if you've got the CC points and stay IHG occasionally. I will warn you though that alot of IHG properties do some dumb poo poo like King, Luxury King, Executive King where the difference is like 3 sq ft and a view change so the auto upgrades are hit or miss. I got auto upgraded out of a water-view balcony king into a city view suite in Dubai and was a little butt hurt about it.

you can also leverage the points into an actual hotel stay but idk if thats like "efficient". I didn't do the $ napkin math I just wanted to wax my whole vacation on points and lol now im spire elite ahead of schedule

e: Plat also gets you quite a bit at Kimptons which is where I stay on vacations like 25$ raid the bar credit, two free drinks at check in and % off whatever bars and restaurants they have on campus which comes in handy in like NYC and MIA since those Kimptons actually have a night life or scene that people go to. Area 31 at the Kimpton Epic in Miami is baller.

e2: Also the NYC Intercontinental Times Square is only 75K the last time i checked for New Years Eve. I was thinking of dumping my points into that.

About to fly to Hong Kong, it’ll be my first time being there. Besides dodging protestors (and now bullets, apparently), I’m looking to get a suit or two made for myself. Y’all got any recommendations?

The internet tells me a few things but I’d like to know what this special little corner of the internet says. I’ll be there for 6 days. Enough time? What would the cost look like? My budget is about 500 US.

Also, any food tips? Staying in Causeway Bay right next to Victoria park. After HK I’m headed to Tokyo for a week or so, and I’ve been there twice in the last 6 months but any tips there would also be appreciated.

You all might have some insight on this. Folks at my firm get a company AmEx gold for business expenses. Apparently you can upgrade to an Amex Diamond or whatever after a year or two. What’s the benefit there? More points? My understanding is that limits don’t figure into things.

Off the top of my head lounge acess, TSA reimbursement, and maybe a travel credit off the top of my head.

Also the points multiplayer

Amex plat gets you into the Bruichladdich z0ne (“Centurion Club”) at a few airports.

If work is paying for it, do it. It's just more benefits all around.

https://card.americanexpress.com/m/platinum-charge-card/

Centurion lounges are cool, but rare. The best perk, imo, is sky club access if you're flying Delta, which means a lounge in every airport instead of once in a blue moon.

Any recommendations for a good US bank to have for frequent (once per month) personal? Or am I just going to have to eat the ATM fees every time I need to withdraw cash?

I have TD bank for Canada and HSBC along with Citi accounts for Asia but I kind of wish there was a US bank that was recommended which reimbursed X ATM fees each months for the times traveling that I needed cash.

Seconding Charles Schwab. They make you also open a money market account but you don't have to use it or put any money in it. I just keep a couple hundred in the checking at all times in case I need an ATM for whatever reason.

USAA if you can join. There was a period when you didn’t have to be military to open an account, and they also refund ATM fees.
