The rates aren't great compared to a lot of indie shops, but everyone has been pretty friendly and you get name recognition and networking since most of your co-writers and devs do their own stuff or work for other companies and, if you do good work, can help recommend you. This is a very networking-intensive industry that way, from what I can tell. Putting out homebrew material on the Storypath Nexus and other stuff like that can also help get you recognition, I'd think. Oh, and it's pay-on-publication, so your check won't come for a while if you get hired.

Reading through the previous thread (Just 440 more pages to go! ) when the Beast Player's Guide was dropped that very merit was brought up as a way to reenact Persona 4, with the Beast naturally being Izanami. Just another way to point out that it sucks that Beast is garbage peddled by an abusive bastard because it's bizarrely fascinating when it isn't being irredeemably hideous. A Beast's Poochie aura also applies to the drat game as a whole.

Some day when I have time I want to write a ChroD fan splat that leans heavily on the astral / oneiros / temenos stuff, because it's one of the most interesting parts of the cosmology, but the only splats that really have easy access to it are Mages, Changelings, and Beasts; it's not a focus in Mage (and of relatively little interest to non-Mastigoi anyways except insofar as it's between us and the Supernal), crammed into too little word count in Changeling, and Beast is garbage. I'm thinking of something along similar lines to Leviathan: The Tempest except not as comically overcomplicated and unusable. Get as much mileage out of that "Astral Sea" imagery as possible, maybe make the PCs a more sympathetic version of Innsmouth fish-people, that sort of thing. Speaking as someone who literally just announced his retirement as Mage Developer ten minutes ago... You will never be rich. You will never get the recognition you deserve. The opportunities you get have more to do with who you drink with at conventions than the quality of your work, but you're only as good as your last delivery on those opportunities. You would make more money being the drummer in a pub band, and sell more books if you wrote porn. But it really is the best feeling in the world when people talk about game worlds you shaped, or you see an Actual Play or a FATAL & Friends of your material. Do it. Enjoy it.

Are there any monster types that you folks would like to see be a playable book? I know there are a lot of old weirdo stuff so I'm basing this on what's on offer with the most recent gen. I have some notes about classic shapeshifters that I'd focus on if people were interested.

Witches. Not mages, like, actual people in pointy hats who run around on their high horse cursing people and getting into really petty neighborhood drama.

Inzombiac posted:Are there any monster types that you folks would like to see be a playable book? Dragons, and kaiju/giant monsters generally. I realize this is way too overt for the ChroD proper, but speaking of the Astral and Beast's wasted potential, you could make a fantastic game about people who are giant monsters in the world of dreams and archetypal ideas, and who fight each other there for territory that corresponds to the social atmosphere of the human community they live in, kind of like with spirits and resonance except more explicitly related to people. Gorgons / medusae, and more broadly other Greek-flavored monsters that used to be people but got turned into part-monster chimeras as part of a (almost always unjust) punishment by the gods. Scion kind of scratches this itch but it's a heroic setting, I want that horror aspect of being betrayed and degraded because you wouldn't bow to someone who already has nearly absolute power.

Deviant wraps up one of the larger untapped fictional pools. God's own prototypes, the weirdos and misfits of the occult world that conform to no particular standard, probably hunted by someone [Often the group that made them], whose powers are whatever the plot needs them to be. Beyond that......urgh, the truly inhuman? Literally something not tied to this world at all, the absolute Outsider. Be it your Elder Dark or literal aliens or whatever, something that doesn't care about Earth or it's cosmology in any sense, but for some reason has been bumped up against it.

The only good ideas in there, not counting tangential stuff in Tooth & Nail, are Lair giving you a personal dungeon to assume your true boss form in, Nightmares having little pithy second-person dream narration instead of conventional description, and Sleeping Beauty being unintentionally sympathetic and righteous. Beasts aren't even satisfying as pitch black villains to avenge yourself on.

Oh, of course, I guess I just meant 'losers that don't matter to anyone except changelings'. I mean, you can be a total loser and still be a powerful person (and 'person' is such a wide-rangingly applicable term in a setting with almost totally alien sapient intelligences) that affects the lives of many other people. The Greek Gods in particular were an extremely petty bunch of assholes, who, indeed, ruled because might made right, and even the Greeks at the time acknowledged they were, indeed, a bunch of assholes, but...they're still The Gods. Infallibility and the notion of perfect morality in a deity is far from a Universal concept throughout human history, after all. I'd say The Olympians (and Hades too) would certainly fit into a 'actually True Fae, or rather some True Fae that were actually The Olympians' concept, in any case, given both their pettiness and their constantly playing with mortal lives to amuse themselves/use them as proxies in conflicts against their peers/etc in various ways. Hunter is a good choice if you're enjoying the "What the gently caress is that, kill it with fire, OH gently caress IT'S NOT DYING RUN AWAY!" Stuff. You'll need the Blue World of Darkness core and Hunter to actually play it but what I've read of the Hunter core (and HRG which was fantastic) it definitely has a good balance of "We can do this" and "We're probably gonna die but we're taking them out with us" And since 2e hunter isn't out yet, make sure you get the 1e World of Darkness blue book and not the Chronicles of Darkness book. Anyone with more experience with nWod/CoD can correct me if I missed anything. It looks like I've got potentially two V5 games shaping up which I'm hype as gently caress about. I've gotta spend some time this weekend working out world stuff for myself because I'm tossing chunks of metaplot into the dumpster and remixing some CoD stuff into things. First time storytelling WoD and the sad teenager in me who never got to play these games as back then is bouncing off the walls.

I think I like the idea of being part of a group of people in over their heads fighting monsters they barely understand, so should I start reading through the Hunter stuff? Hunter is one of the most even gamelines in terms of writing quality and gameability. It's versatile, accessible to players unfamiliar with the setting, and friendly to being tailored to whatever kind of game you want to run, if a little fiddly at times. It's a very strong starting choice. There are two rules editions of the Chronicles of Darkness (and to further confuse things, the name changed shortly into the edition change, so first edition materials will actually say World of Darkness). First edition nWoD/CofD gamebooks require a central World of Darkness Rulebook in addition to whatever gameline corebook you're using, so to play first edition Hunter, you will need the World of Darkness Rulebook and the Hunter: the Vigil book. Options to play Hunter using the second edition ruleset are unfortunately kind of convoluted currently, though a Second Edition of Hunter: the Vigil is under development. There is a supplement called Mortal Remains which, in addition to a little travelogue of secondary CofD gameline monsters viewed from the perspective of hunters, contains an appendix to hot-patch Hunter rules for 2e. You would then still need either the free God-Machine Rules Update (paired with the World of Darkness Rulebook) or any other Second Edition gameline corebook (except Demon, why is it all so inconsistent) to provide the core ruleset of a 2e game. As noted above, 2e CofD gamebooks (except Demon) contain all the rules necessary to run the game in the titled corebook, rather than requiring a second rulebook. There is a Chronicles of Darkness Rulebook available for second edition, but it's purely optional and just provides expanded systems, extra Merits, and stuff to run games about less hunty mortals encountering the supernatural: think Twin Peaks to Hunter's Supernatural, say. So if you find yourself interested in any of the other gamelines that have been updated to second edition, those are one-book investments.

Changeling: the Lost is a very, very good game, and its 1e corebook is one of the best books White Wolf or Onyx Path ever put out. While, yes, it does have some heavy themes at its heart, I would advise any new person interested in the various *od: the * games to check it out. Hunter is also a very good game, of course, but I just had to get that out there.

I think I like the idea of being part of a group of people in over their heads fighting monsters they barely understand, so should I start reading through the Hunter stuff? I think one of the best parts of the entire WoD, old and new, is that the feeling of being over your head and fighting monsters you barely understand is evoked in pretty much every splat regardless of how powerful they are. So yeah, the above Hunter advice is on point, but if you wanted to see how scared shitless the monsters are (and the monsters are always, always, fundamentally people) there are options. But I'd especially shout out nDemon and nChangling. nDemon is a bit different since you're a person but you were never a human, but playing a half-demon or a stigmatic (a mortal clued into demon poo poo) gets you there and the God-Machine and it's minions are incredible monsters you can barely understand. It's tone is a lot more "waging a cold war against" than outright fighting, but it's still a fight. nChangeling is cool because even having read all the deep storyteller lore about what True Fae (the main antagonists) are and how they work there's still something ineffable and impossible to understand about them -- and any individual True Fae is going to be a lot weirder than the general description of their uh, species?
