TWITCH: SaltEMike’s Day Off
I’ve been so busy these last couple months I haven’t bothered to check a Twitch stream in ages. But I figured I’d briefly sample Twerk’s (SaltEMike’s) tonight to see what he thought of 3.7.
With caves added and a big new patch to show off, he apparently took a workday off to stream. He expected ~600 viewers, given the newsworthiness of the release.
Less than 200 showed up.
“I’m not taking off work tomorrow. And I’m not taking off work for a release ever again.”
Hestogen (in comments) “PtU view count has gone down with every release.”
HansYolo (in comments) “People don’t care about a new patch because 3.5 and 3.6 were so bad.”
—
I don’t pay close attention to SC Twitch these days. After the Rexocalypse, things seemed to be getting dismal for the old guard. We hear tell from CIG that sales are better than ever, yet their own content has been cut down to nearly nothing. CitizenCon is, what, a third the size of last year? Squadron, the theoretical source of their next big cash infusion, keeps getting pushed further and further back. Streamer audiences for the old guard have been gutted and it’s unclear how many human viewers Rex has. 3rd party forums like MMORPG are like ghost towns compared to the old days. And Chris and Sandi are MIA.
Where is the proof of life? Backers were several times more engaged — with streamers, with social media, with CIG video content — three years ago. So where’s the pulse? (Aside from Bar Citizen hangouts and screenshot upvotes on the subreddit, I mean.) If this is the best year of their 7 year life, why does it feel so much deader than 2012-2016? Three years ago news of a new show demo could seize headlines across all the game rags and induce ecstasia in general gaming subreddits like /Games or /PCgaming. It’s just surreal that we’ve seen contracting engagement and interest everywhere yet the financials claim “biggest year yet!”
It does make me wonder if Calder money might be being used to boost revenues artificially. If they can show big growth numbers, then attracting the next investment wouldn’t be so hard. Maybe it’s too cynical to assume they’ve gone full Ponzi at this point, but it’s not like Chris, Ortwin & Friends are above it. Or above much of anything, really. Maybe there real demand out there and I’m just missing it?
CitCon is right around the corner. Devs are working as we speak on demos showing wormhole traversals to Pyro, on slicker than ever SQ42 moviegame clips, on exciting new volcanic biomes and other more-of-the-same “game changers” that change quite little for the thing that ain’t a game.
But who, besides the hangars on, cares?
In your regular financial report new equity such as the Calder´s would be quite hard to pass as revenue. In CIG´s "blogs"? Anything is possible.

unfortunately less amounts of suckers following project doesnt mean less amount of funding.
as long as CIG can keep the myth of huge numbers of players following the project up the whales will keep on funding this.
Because they want to be the idol lesser backers look up to.
Its kind of bizarre model train club, where club members are sharing their rides with each others, while thinking about all those lesser backers being jealous of their fancy rides.
Some wont even care about the state of the game. They know its bad, they admit that its bad. But hey look at this cool Jpeg, and promises it has for the future.

I'll tell you a big secret about reddit.... wait for it... almost there...
There is a shitload of bots and bot-like people in that cesspool. Those people with RES and a list of enemy combatants? They just join a thread, press the "poo poo on them!" button and blammo! everybody on the list gets a downvote per post. Of course, there are all sorts o deplorables with crap opinions and an itchy downvote button too, so anything below 10 up/downvotes may as well be noise.
Also, some people just find a comment that they dislike and then they go old-style and ctrl+f your username to click that sweet, sweet downvote button as many times as possible because that will show you! it will show you good!
I have been in discussions like 30 replies deep and then, suddenly get a gaggle of downvotes in a minute when I piss some of the bigger idiots. (Tip: while your post downvotes have a built-in variation, your total karma hasn't, so you do get to know when someone uses multiple accounts to blast your post.
Reddit is serious business.
Yeah, i know it.

Remember, that Calder money was only for marketing, until CIG started using it for development, then it was for development and marketing.
Typical CIG speak in their announcements, people can read whatever that want to into them, and they did.

I wonder when CIG will try to let their whales buy NPC escort ships to travel alongside their big luxury chariots and protect them from goons. Sure, they wouldn't work properly and would likely make the servers fall over even faster, but that hasn't exactly stopped them before.

When I read 'escort ships', I imagined something completely different at first.
When will CIG sell brothel jpegs 'entertainment ships'? I am pretty sure they would sell well and it's what SC whales actually crave.

If the bug that transforms a commando to a Lovecraftian monstrosity with tentacles for limbs is still there, I can see some emergent fun gameplay happening.

But who, besides the hangars on, cares?
Makes sense, I've always thought they'd be quick to massage the numbers if they started to drop.
When the collapse does finally happen, it will happen fast. Their main supporters know they're funding the month-to-month expenses of the studio(s). They're fine with this, as long as they can continue to believe that they aren't wasting their money, that others are also shouldering the burden and keeping CIG afloat.
BUT the instant a ship sale under-performs, leading to the next ship sale being a disastrous flop- too many backer's faith would be shaken. If enough people say "well, I'll sit this sale out and see what happens", well it's like the end of a ponzi scheme. Less new money coming in means no money paid out means even less new money coming in...
This will mean nothing to the most culty die-hard supporters but there really aren't enough of them to fund this by themselves, they need the mid-level whales.
There are a lot of reasons for Chris and Sandi to have vanished from sight, them seeing the writing on the wall could be the big one.

Yes because they have now developed groundbreaking CaveTech™
I bet tenbux that caves will accidentally have Localised Physics Grids or whatever the latest CIG buzz-phrase is.
I want to see videos of commandos going into caves and promptly reorienting so "up" or "left" is the new "down".
