All mainstream finance articles about frugal millenials buying houses in their 30s have parental backing or inheritances involved. You can make a drinking game of counting how many paragraphs it takes for the buried lede to surface.

The US has the same sort of lovely early retirement articles and the final paragraphs give away info that there parents gave them 200K for downpayment/free house to start their passive income slum lord empire.

We also have articles on people climbing the ladder from the mail room up to being VP of marketing (getting one promotion per week, in their parents' company)

I mean I get it but it's all part of the system. Normal countries protect renters so that landlords are bound to very strict rules to make life as easy as possible for the renter.

*in American/Canadian/English/Australian/New Zealand voice* But if we enact laws that limit the landlords' abilities to gently caress their tenants, then those laws will affect me once I'm a rich. And I will definitely be rich because I work hard!

Yeah, there's no way a 27yr old buys a house in the uk in 2019 without some serious cash backing from their parents.

I could take in a lodger myself but I really don't see how a few hundred quid a month balances out having some stranger hanging out in your house on a semi-permanent basis.

Nah, there's loads of places that offer the "help to buy" scheme, especially new build shoe box estates. I know a couple of young lads who I work with who just got brand new 3 bedroom places on a new build estate and pay less than £500 a month mortgage. Not sure how that works but I have to admit I was pretty surprised at how cheap it was to get roped into a life of mortgage servitude.

I was just looking at the $7m one and I like how there's a 6-foot-by-6-foot "foyer".

That said the prices seem marginally better than central London, if you ignore the overpriced ones.

Imo, all housing should be:

- owner occupiers
- council housing
- uni students doing their year living in a damp, dilapidated terrace and attempting to maintain a weekly cleaning/ washing up rota

And nothing else :colbert:

Just as you try to close all human movement in an out of your nation party to a common economic union, a brigade Winged Hussars crest a nearby heath. Nearby women and children weep as the raiding party of slavs garrote you from horseback. GAME OVER
