I was wrong about the lack of exposition, it's just that instead of die it's rock paper scissors. Also, considering the first route I did was Mizumi, I apparently missed the entire concept of changing the world through the dreams, which I find kinda funny. They even make a reference to the Berenstein universe which is pretty great. I'm essentially playing a different game at this point. feel super bad about neglecting her on this (I assume) Iris path though. Also They put a loving Minecraft level in a visual novel, the madmen. That's been a major part of the fun for me. My brother and I often live react message each other to series/games we recommend. Since he played the Zero Escape games first and got my reactions, it's been a lot of fun to have it the other way this time!

Just got the Ota ending. I would be more on board with this character if he wasn't a 24 year old guy creeping on an 18 year old. Even at the end of the path catered toward him, he calls her his girlfriend after his stupid actions helped lose her an eye. I also got the Iris ending a little while ago. Jesus christ this poor girl doesn't catch a break, does she. Even if she's not the focus I hope there's at least one path where she isn't hosed over. Also, Date was really quick to just pull her eye out. I know the game explained earlier that an eye coming out isn't necessarily the end of the world but drat, I would think that alone could kill her. The pieces are starting to come together, and I'm not sure how much more there is to the game, but I'm loving it so far.

I think we can excuse Date because everyone in the game calls him out on being creepy and a pervert and it’s taken to such ludicrous levels that it could almost fall into parody. Also, while Date can be a pervert, he’s generally a good guy who has great chemistry with pretty much all the cast. It’s hard not to love the dork.

The boss is like.. leather jacket, sure, boots, ok pretty normal so far, huge amount of cleavage well i guess anime. And Ota is just Ash Ketchum, its just a hat and some young man clothes, nothing crazy. And then the main Scientist dude comes along with his 3 foot tall neon green collar and its like ok sure sure sure. And then.. then there's Mr Matsushita.

SardonicTyrant posted:Me: Ew Sigma stop talking about your weird love of poster girls. I don't know why Date works but he just does, one of the great dumbass protagonists. It helps that Aiba and/or Mizuki is always around to trash him and he is not skeevy with minors, but honestly a lot of it is the VA selling it every time, and chemistry as was mentioned. A poster in the RPG thread mentioned that the game "leans REALLY hard into awkward sex jokes in all kinds of horrifying situations where they fall flat", and this is 100% true, but it is also inexplicably a strength rather than a disaster? In general I hate that stuff and Danganronpa 2's intrusive grossness drove me nuts but most of the time in this game I'm just "oh, Date" as Aiba plays bad cop. (oh God Date Hitomi is right there please don't smell her shoes) It's the kind of game where there's almost nothing to discuss in the non-spoiler thread, but I just finished it and I can't recommend it enough, it's on my GOTY shortlist, go play it While Virtue's Last Reward is maybe a wilder ride, AI:tSF has a better emotional payoff and a very strong core duo in Date and Aiba, and IMO Uchikoshi does a better job than before here mixing zany slapstick with emotional drama and very dark bits. I would actually feel worse spoiling any of the tiny character interactions in this game than I would spoiling the core mysteries, they're meant to be stumbled upon. I was not sure how the localization would turn out but I ended up with only a few nits to pick, it's strong where it matters and the source material is an absolute nightmare to deal with. It's not a perfect game, I wasn't a huge fan of the Somnium mechanic. The dream logic was too abstruse and made it pretty much trial and error, and I only just realized that I should have been harassing Aiba the whole time for flavor dialogue instead of trying to clear the stages. A few characters are a bit grating. But as a whole package it delivers and is more than the sum of its parts. Again, loved it, play it if you can at all stomach Japanese adventure games/anime.

I just got the final ending. That was a drat good game and I am glad to see Uchikoshi's still got it. I have many thoughts but my main ones are that while the plot ends up getting somewhat convoluted, it's not nearly to the level of something like say Zero Escape, and once you slow down and think about it, it actually seems to be pretty consistent. I figured out the swapping bodies twist for the killer but the whole Rohan thing threw a wrench in my thought process, so the reveals still managed to get me off guard. The only part that seemed kinda dumb was Saito beating up Rohan/Date, hearing the story about switching bodies and going "You know, that sounds like fun, I'm gonna do it right now to this guy I beat to near death" I have many thoughts I might post later but the ending credits were also fantastic.

This game is pretty neat. These contemporary "3d anime-style" games look really great on an OLED tv. Even though I'm pretty early into the game, I already have some guesses about what one of the twists might be. It's good to hear that the net impression of the game is apparently positive. I feel like Zero Time Dilemma's issue was largely that it wrote itself into a corner with the previous games, so hopefully starting a new IP allows them to have a better total plot. The bummer about ZTD is that the game itself was still very enjoyable, but that enjoyment largely came from the expectation of plot twists being resolved in a satisfying way (which wasn't really fulfilled). vvv The main twist was still kinda lovely, even if you ignore connecting it with the other games. I think the opposite of ZTD. The game was enjoyable once you accepted that not all the plot threads from VLR would be resolved, and the game was just gonna do its own thing mainly. Stuff like Carlos' time jumping adventure were great and really didn't have anything to do with the original setup for instance. I enjoy ZTD but it is definitely not the game we were promised, and above all I am very glad Uchikoshi was able to move on from it.

I like the general atmosphere to this game for some reason. Like the way environments look combined with the music, and also how there's scenes of you actually driving and talking to people in the car. That's actually kinda something new to this "series" given the other well-known games (all the Zero Escape games and Ever17) took place in enclosed areas. Though Ever17 was also really great with the "atmosphere" stuff, largely thanks to its music (which has a very nostalgic "90s/early 2000s VN" sort of feel to it).

i think i lucked into the best route for story progression by chance, reveal order wise. all of the right, then upper left, then all the bottom stuff i dont plan to play his other games (because i've heard about plotholes), but is getting the true ending as straight forward in other titles as in this?
