I'm hazy on the history, but recall reading that the US withdrew support for the Mujahideen in Afghanistan like this as well, and this was part of what attracted so much islamic terrorism targeted at it in the decades to follow. I can't help but think that if the Kurds decide to take out their anger on the US in the same way, it's going to be much less "underwear bomber" and much more "9/11" Basically, this doesn't seem like the US avoiding a war at all, but making a new enemy and immediately turning around pretending they're not there. There's a whole host of reasons as to how the US became the Great Satan to some of the Mujahideen in the greater Middle East, and withdrawing support post Afghan war is really low on that list.
