A lot of the long term push for support of the Kurds was that a Kurdish state would've been in an extremely favorable location wrt US geopolitical concerns, would've been extremely favorably disposed to the US, would've already had US military bases and infrastructure in place as well as a legacy of cooperation with US forces and, ultimately, would serve a similar role as an ally as Israel does, but without most of the baggage. Plus the Kurds are one of the most sympathetic groups in the entire region who share a ton of traditionally cosmopolitan euro-american values.

Also depending on how things shaked out, a kurdistan could've been sitting on some very large oil reserves and would've been crossed by a number of important ME-Europe oil pipelines. There was a very real potential for essentially a generational foreign policy success and it was 80% complete when Trump took office, too.

Like this was the easiest layup for a “Look the US military CAN do something not comically cruel and bad” and instead we again went with the worst possible option

Kurds should have built a Trump Tower. The US hasn’t gone to war against a country that has built a Trump building.

Well long complicated story but as it is Kurdish isn't a country, it's a people. The US isn't going to war with them or anybody, just more or less abandoning them to an aggressive and imminent military operation from Turkey happening in their lands. A military operation with really ominous Erdogan language behind in the vein of "water(ing) the east of Euphrates with fountains of peace".

It's still crazy to me that most of the problems in the Middle East still date back to the post WWI decision to gently caress over allies that fought alongside the Triple Entente against the Ottomans by breaking their promises to them. Instead of getting what they were promised (basically various ethnically distinct states to call their own) for fighting with them and winning the big colonial powers instead divided up the occupied Ottoman's lands without any regard for the ethnic distinctions, religious beliefs and various other key differences that are the source of many of the conflicts that exist today.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Treaty_of_S%C3%A8vres#Kurdistan

There WAS supposed to be a Kurdistan that would be recognized as it's own distinct self-governed state, but instead it just became various regions of Syria, Turkey, Iraq and Iran.

Also holy poo poo Lindsey Graham breaking briefly from Strong Daddy? :eyepoop: Do we get to see him twist himself into a pretzel later to both do his foreign policy thing and pump Trump's tires?

Maybe the Kurds should just rename their entire ethnic group to "the Donald Trump's" and then we'd probably protect them for life. Build a trump golf course in damascus. Bing bang so simple!

More trash for the trash fire

I can't imagine that this move in Syria is even a distraction from impeachment more than just a snap decision while talking to Erdogan, considering how off-putting this is to his staunchest allies in the Senate. While I fully support Trump getting hosed-over for this, it sucks that it comes at the cost of Kurdish lives.

I'm hazy on the history, but recall reading that the US withdrew support for the Mujahideen in Afghanistan like this as well, and this was part of what attracted so much islamic terrorism targeted at it in the decades to follow.

I can't help but think that if the Kurds decide to take out their anger on the US in the same way, it's going to be much less "underwear bomber" and much more "9/11"

Basically, this doesn't seem like the US avoiding a war at all, but making a new enemy and immediately turning around pretending they're not there.

Ehhhh, that's not an A -> B through line. There's a whole host of reasons as to how the US became the Great Satan to some of the Mujahideen in the greater Middle East, and withdrawing support post Afghan war is really low on that list.

probably not as 'dramatic' as 9/11, if you will, but most Kurdish territories are already pretty loving hardcore who have been fighting this poo poo for a long time and we're functionally about to tell them 'pft sucks for y'all, later skaters!'
