He's also fundamentally opposed to the idea of spending money on anything that helps someone other than the US. This is extremely on brand for things he cares about, I don't think he understood that it could lead to ethnic cleansing at all.

IMO it says a lot about how Rs feel towards trump behind closed doors that he's getting this much public pushback instantly. The Kurd's specifically english language efforts to produce US-oriented propaganda paid off, but not this much.

I disagree; he's threatened to do this a few times in the last year and has met some moderate push back each time. Like, 2-3 times this has happened and he finally just gave the order with no warning.

The only thing that has proven consistent in trying to decipher trump's decisions is finding how it benefits him personally. That's all that matters to him; either he's being blackmailed, or was offered a business deal, or more dirt on biden, or was somehow convinced that this would be a net good and play to the anti-imperialist part of his base.

It's more likely that Trump had no idea that pulling the troops in such a way implies an ethnic cleansing. It's not like he consulted with anyone before making the call, and Erdogan certainly was not going to volunteer that bit of info.

Because he doesn't have the ability to look at the implications of his actions except for he he thinks it means for him. He sees it as an attempt to get us out of a long running war, because he expects to get good reaction for bringing our boys home. And under many circumstances, thats not a terrible political instinct. If he had signed a withdrawal from Afganistan that wasn't gonna be at Camp David on the week on 9/11, that would have probably given him a boost. But since they hosed that up, he was looking for something else to give him a similar bump. So he decided, sure lets just pull out of Syria. He didn't ask the military for their opinion and pretty obviously didn't ask anyone in congress, he just had this brilliant idea and told some underling to make the tweet. He didn't consider the impact of it on our allies because he doesn't give a poo poo about anyone other than him. He didn't listen to any advisors because he thinks he knows more than any of them.

Because you are dealing with a pathological narcissist who is literally incapable of behaving in a rational manner. His brain is broken in a very specific way, and once you understand the specifics of how his brain is broken there is a certain rhyme to his actions, although not a reason.

You know how in situations of extreme trauma the brain can enter a disassociated state? Survivors of extreme situations will often describe going into an "autopilot" mental state we're all internal dialogue has seized and they are simply acting. Well... This state can also be triggered in children, and if you trigger a child into this state (through extreme stress) enough times....then one time they will remain in that state basically permanently.

When this occurs normal maturity and development of an inner World effectively ceases, and the individual goes through puberty and enters adulthood without an internal monologue. They are simply acting, they are simply pursuing the desires of the ID. Individuals in this state effectively become addicted to their own neural chemistry, that is to say their brain rewires itself to pursue pleasurable experiences exclusively. Whatever causes a natural dopamine dump in their brain is what these individuals will relentlessly pursue.

Another factor in being trapped in this permanent state is the total lack of self-awareness, or perhaps a complete lack of awareness of the self. Trump cannot get any feedback on himself or his existence internally, heat depends completely on external sources of feedback in order to know he even exists. He literally needs other people to be reacting to him at all times in order for him to even be aware that he exists; absent some sort of constant human feedback he feels an existential dread that he will do anything to avoid.

Trump is an addict; he is an old addict who has been on a long-term binge and it's catching up with him, and he is self-destructing. Trump does not have the capacity to formulate a logical plan and act on it, he asked purely on Instinct, and the only goal he pursues is his own self-gratification in the moment. Trump is no more capable of behaving rationally than are heroin addict is of refusing 1 hit of heroin right now in exchange for a promise of 5 hits of heroin tomorrow.

Somehow Trump got it in his head that pulling all US forces out of that area would make him feel good, and so he did it. If you want to understand Trump's actions, just recognize that he is an addict and his addiction is human attention. There is no deeper motivation/no capacity for a deeper agenda than Trump's need to feel powerful and be at the center of attention in the moment.
