It had all the necessary elements: the brilliant, articulate professor in chief with an unapologetically progressive vision of America; a narrative arc rooted in ongoing themes of idealism and public service; but most importantly, a cast of patriotic Americans who labored every day, as members of the President’s staff, to serve the country they loved.” One collection of testimonials, edited by Raghavan, is called West Wingers; another memoir is called West Winging It.

U.S. News: You criticize the Miranda ruling, which gives suspects the right to have a lawyer present before police questioning. Shouldn't people, who may be innocent, have such protection?

Meese: Suspects who are innocent of a crime should. But the thing is, you don't have many suspects who are innocent of a crime. That's contradictory. If a person is innocent of a crime, then he is not a suspect.

here's another Joe E Ross anecdote to feel good

quote:

The dainty and charming Imogene Coca hated working with [Joe E] Ross. "I met Imogene Coca," says Evanier. "I asked her [about Ross]. She just blushed, muttered something about 'that awful man' and changed the subject." Sherwood Schwartz concludes that Coca's aversion was quite justifiable. "He was kind of a crude man, told it like it is... didn't beat around the bush. He had an annoying habit. They were wearing fur-leather [costumes] ... they gapped open in various places and sometimes he would just sit down and you could see his privates. She didn't think that was very nice."

yeah this guy was attorney general

he was also known for his crackdowns on the berkeley free speech movement in the 60s when reagan was governor, and for his efforts to outlaw pornography, and basically he never did anything that promoted freedom in any way so sure why not give him the presidential medal of freedom
