Watching the Cohh stream, enjoying everything except the clock, I hate timed stuff in games :negative: (but I still don't know how much time influences in the game, if things become missable, etc.)

^^IIRC from devblogs the clock is more so for immersion and some gameplay mechanics - like, you have to scrounge up money to pay rent each day before sundown to have a place to sleep and suchlike. You can sleep any time after 9:00pm and sleeping replenishes your health/morale. Also, some NPCs change where they're at or might only be accessible/inaccessible altogether at certain times. P.sure main quest is not timed, though some side events and quests are.^^

Cohh chose to make a character with 1 hitpoint in health and 1 hitpoint in morale. He's gonna die on the first day.

Day cycle repeating sounds good, as long as in timed side events/quests the timer starts as soon as you start the quest, I'm ok with it.

Yeah, he died 2 times. The dialogue in this game is hilarious, and you talking with your inner self owns a lot

I think it's less "you have this amount of time to complete the task" and more, "this only happens from Day 3 onwards" type thing, though might be wrong on that point. BTW time only moves when you click on choosing a response or "Continue" when in dialogue, click to look at hotspots etc.,and sleep. It stays still when you walk or wander around looking at pretty graphics as long as you don't click on anything. Also, internalizing thoughts takes time too.

Cohh just discovered some Morale loss wasn't instant even at 1 point, and had time to use a healing item before it depleted.

That affirms my choice to make a 4-2-2-4 cop, because it seems like having literally no margin of error between you and a game over is a recipe for frustration. I don't think I agree with that choice. I think a base of 1 HP/morale before adding in the bonus from the attribute would be better.

Jun 15, 2010

Watching that Cohh stream further it looks like as long as you have healing items, if you take damage it automatically uses up a healing item from the inventory instead of outright killing you, which is a pretty neat compromise.

Well, the margin of error at 1 is however many health restorative items you have on hand, which you will eat through like candy at 1.

An interesting look at your partner: Kim's his own man. He has his own hang-ups and little quirks and flights of fancy (like surmising one of the boot prints belongs to a drummer), if perhaps less vividly external as you have the potential for, and he has failures, too. He's not a bad cop, and seems a lot more brushed up on protocol and procedure than you, but he'll miss a lot of finer details you can muster or wring out of people, and he's no marksman. Bit more nuanced than simply the straight-man foil. Personally it's probably going to be hard to try "bad" runs where I deliberately disappoint him. :ohdear:

Holy poo poo, the opening of that newest devblog is not pulling any punches, and is extremely my jam:

quote:

When middle class people talk about foreign places, they like to talk about “contrasts”. Travel magazines, financial journals, regional reports on the news... it's all about those contrasts.

And what they mean by “contrasts” is that most people are pornographically poor while a few are obscenely wealthy. That's what they mean by contrasts.

Definitely spoilery though, yeah. More so than the Day 1 preview videos.

Some spoilery stuff I noticed about reactivity:

Between watching that initial preview video of the first 20 minutes and Cohh's stream, I noticed an interesting and promising difference in narrative reactivity. The MC awakens from his hangover having lost his gun, but doesn't immediately notice its absence. In the preview video the MC discovers this while talking on the radio back to his precinct and got laughed at by his peers. In Cohh's stream he didn't learn he had lost his gun until he was in the middle of a high stakes conversation with a union leader, who dropped this knowledge as a veiled threat. Consequently, Cohh was taking penalties to further skill checks in the conversation for "lost gun was a surprise"

With sequence differences like the above and seeing how the skills interact with your perception of situations across different builds, I can't help but wonder what the design documents look like. It's gotta be some loving madman poo poo with corkboards and lines of string going all over. It remains to be seen how the density of this kind of reactivity and poo poo holds up throughout the rest of the game but goddamn if what I have seen isn't impressive as gently caress. The writing is all very good, in ways I'm not used to in games.

It sounds to me like this is actually a pretty good way to miss a lot of content. Which is also what makes me so drat excited, most games only skillbranch as far as "You either succeed at the thing or you can't do it and have to do something else" as opposed to "you either succeed at the thing or you fail, which leads to an entirely new set of events and consequences", which is exactly what an RPG SHOULD do, in my mind.

I brought it up before, but it was on display again in the stream, so a decent upfront example: If you fail your Endurance check while trying to examine the hanging corpse, you throw up. Kim then suggests you go pick up some ammonia to help clear your head. Once you get some, you get +1 bonus to your roll and unlock the chance to try again. Failing the SECOND Endurance check has Kim telling you to get your poo poo together before you try again. This unlocks the Volumetric poo poo Compressor Thought, which requires half an hour of ingame time to pass to internalize. Once it's done, all your Endurance white checks are unlocked and your Endurance skill cap is raised to 4. (You also get a hefty +6 bonus to your roll for checking the corpse.) You skip ALL of that if you pass your check the first try - which you'll PROBABLY only do with a high FYSique score, which renders the Thought largely worthless to you anyhow.

Now, I don't recall any examples shown at the time, but at least some Thoughts are also supposed to be conversation influencers down the line if they're active, so it's entirely possible that you'll miss out on a dialogue option or two without Volumetric poo poo Compressor active, if not just more roll bonuses like the +6. (More immediately, it's a build shaper for having used FYSique as a dump stat: if you have 1 FYS, this effectively raises your max Endurance score to 5, which means 5 Health, which is slightly better than if you'd started with 2 FYS. If you started with 2 FYS, your max score goes to 6, which would be roughly equivalent to having started with 3 FYS. But none of that matters if all your stats are already capped.)

I really like the give and take in the dialog with Kim while investigating. Sometimes he has an insight that leads to new information, and sometimes it feels like you're doing the same for him. The world building evident in the small sample of the game I've seen is also pretty astounding, and feels very organic. Small interaction spoiler: The little history lesson on the in-universe version of a high five, the "Ace High" explaining its genesis in the air service, and the option to immediately flow from an Ace High to an Ace Low ala Top Gun had me in stitches. (this was in Cohh's stream)

Moralists don't really *have* beliefs. Sometimes they stumble on one, like on a child's toy left on the carpet. The toy must be put away immediately. And the child reprimanded.

I watched the first hour of the Cohh stream before I decided that I would avoid further spoilers, and I'm pretty sure this game doesn't exist and is actually the result of some sort of fever dream I'm having on my deathbed.
