And I think I read it's some weird thing where legally the school and their employees aren't supposed refer to the school that way, but they're skirting it by having the TV networks/athletic conference/etc. do it instead of doing it directly.

I vaguely remember it took years and some sort of legislation for Southwest Missouri State to become Missouri State. There was a lot of worry that changing the name would steal Mizzou's thunder and hurt them in recruiting or something. And some people are still mad about it now for some reason despite SMSU/Missouri State being...what they are. Like every 8 years or so they have a basketball team on the edge of of the tournament and that's about it.
