Niric posted:This is literal text in the first Nolan film isn't it? Something about how evil Liam Neeson "uses economics" to wreck havoc on the city but is thwarted by good capitalist Batman's Dad building a monorail and staving off recession. Which seems like pure centrism.txt: mass transit and infrastructure projects can be good economic stimuli, but only when undertaken by hard-working entrepreneurs rather than the state Yes and no. Batman as a protagonist over the years has a serious case of the capitalisms however Nolan's look at it is quite critical. Despite all that investment Gotham is hardly doing well. Meanwhile the villains, several of which are also the main protagonists of their respective movies, seek to attack the established social order including capitalism/the justice system and well established and accepted philosophies, particularly virtue ethics. Perhaps the most overt reference is when the Joker literally burns a massive pile of money - the only people affected by it are the mob bosses who value it, it is rendered powerless. Batman never really fixes it despite his billions. Eventually he (symbolically) explodes, which you could read that as the old capitalist order dying. That's quite a simple reading though, they are very good movies from all sorts of perspectives. The cinematography in the Dark Knight is exceptional. I was briefly in the greens during the dark pre Corbyn years and yeah there are a lot of dumbasses involved. Mostly well meaning but totally alarmist and out of touch middle class types. My personal favourites were: - the woman who was near visibly crying because she went to sellafield and saw animals drinking and bathing in the (perfectly safe) water pools around the plant. - well to do old lady extremely mad about teens on mopeds driving up and down her street (?) - posho undergrad with the bold policy idea of 'ban all cars' not the worst idea in the world if you invest in public transport etc but this guy hadn't even considered any of the broader implications Pilchenstein posted:My Joker hot take is that I'm not paying money to watch the director of the loving Hangover trilogy pander to the kind of dipshit who thinks commenting "Idiocracy is a documentary!" under news articles on Facebook passes for a worldview I thought this and yesterday I was meant to be watching a different film but the bus was late and we'd have missed the first 20 mins so we saw joker instead and honestly I'm glad we did because it's cool and not at all what all the pundits are criticising it as. Guavanaut posted:His fascism comparisons are poo poo, but that doesn't mean we can't accept people are forced to move around for all kinds of bad reasons and address those reasons that people are forced to move. The people giving their life savings to traffickers for a chance at crossing the Mediterranean on a pool noodle aren't moving 'where they like' and would probably be happier if they didn't have to do that, same with the people bonded to work gangs, and the people they left behind are often the people who can't leave. Smugglers exist because border control is already too tight meaning they have to cross illegally, you tackle the gangs by opening borders not closing them. There's also two ways of framing the push factors: "people are losing their homes and that's bad" and/Or "those people will try and come here and that's bad" and guess one is pretty bigoted. The article saying that we need to improve the other places does not excuse the xenophobic framing of the issue and the piece is also weak as gently caress at point out that the rest of the world is not inherently poor, it is actively impoverished by the global economic system which needs more than foreign aid to change.

I'm looking forward to the Joker film and it doesn't surprise me that the reaction to a film about how we've hallowed out mental health services and left entire generations poor and with nothing to do gets disingenuous outrage from people who want to talk about anything else.

You need the threat there, but in terms of actually making people’s lives better you can wait 100 years for the big world-changing revolution that improves* your lot, and in the meantime 3-4 generations of boring, compromised moderates have successfully extracted concessions like limited hours working, social security, the NHS, bans on children working in factories etc. They can only do this because of the implied threat of violent revolution, which is why in a functional progressive movement the moderates and the firebrands work in concert to chip away at the status quo and the cathartic revolution probably never happens. *Strictly speaking it probably improves someone else’s lot as you personally get killed in the counter-revolution or purged, but that’s people for you, and it is still, overall, progress.** **Admittedly, this may not matter much to you by that point.
