I’m sure it’s demoralizing but it will probably just turn more of them into natsec libs like two thirds of freshman Dems elected in 2018

So uh, what's going to happen to Kurds and pro-Kurdish political parties in Turkey?

They're 15-20% of the population and I can't imagine they're too happy about the "demographic correction". Is Erdogan going to say with-us-or-against-us and declare any Turkish Kurd remotely critical of this a 5th column?

Hey, here's some PTSD for you: sitting idle on an overlook as you watch Turkish artillery shell the very house you were helping protect 24 hours earlier and you know there's a family of six in there and you helped with the youngest kids birthday party a couple days ago and oh well.

Just loving imagine being me. I have to sit here on the internet and take it all in - knowing that those brave American Troops have to walk away from the slaughter of the very guys they were helping protect.

i love the conflation in western media between the pkk/ypg and this monolithic "kurds."

like I heard "the Kurds are a democratic society which has equal rights for women." -- what he means is socialism creates that society. Kurds in Turkey practice FGM at a huge rate.

few thousand at most, few enough that the SDF could hypothetically defeat them if it came down to it, but the problem is what would happen after they did that

like, the US presence in the region could be six dudes masturbating in a quonset hut and they'd still exercise significant influence, not because of what they themselves can do, but because killing them would mean you're now officially at war with the United States

those six dudes can be like 'you can't go here in this specific spot without having to kill us', for example, and that effectively denies you access to that territory unless you're willing to fight the United States, even if you could kill those six guys no problem (see what the US is doing in Kobani right now as we speak). if the US wants to deny Syria access to the oil they can absolutely do it, for a while anyway (eventually the bluff would be called and I don't think the US has the political will, or even necessarily the ability, for an actual full on invasion right now)
the US is a vampire and the kurds invited them into the house. Never leaving now but will be sure to suck up all the oil and give no damns about how many they leave dead

Kurnugia posted:

right. and how would these few thousand dudes stop the SDF from exporting their oil to Assad? what im picturing from this is us marines laying down in front of oil trucks screaming "your going to have to get thru us igf oil want assad!!!!"
Instead of doing that, they would instead simply call in an airstrike

well, to put thinks in perspective, you can get jailed for speaking Kurdish or singing Kurdish songs in public. I wonder what happens when speak out against ethnic cleansing...

That would be a nice headline: "US won't call in airstrike to protect the Kurds, but will call an airstrike on them to protect their oil."

That said, president babbyhands would prolly revel in it as opposed to the previous ones that would've considered it unacceptable.

It would be easy. "We were forced to step in to prevent the sale of oil to the EVIL ASSAD REGIME." None of the mainstream people currently calling out this betrayal would make a peep when it came to that

The silver lining of all of this is that Valley of the Wolves: Syria will be another great action movie. I really hope they can get Gary Busey again.
