i wasn't sure if the white house had cleared sondland to testify which is why he was now willing to testify: apparently not, state is still telling him not to and he's choosing to listen to the subpoena and ignore the state department https://twitter.com/kyledcheney/status/1182638663433363456 he's still probably going to stick to the company line but it's interesting

Yeah a big thing with cults and the like is they will look for vulnerable people and shower them with love... at first. That builds loyalty and for some people meets a need that they've been missing, and they start recovering. But that love has strings, and it can be used to pull them deeper and deeper into their belief system. It's also decent advice, so it doesn't trigger alarms and makes warnings against them seem alarmist. By the time the groups are sharing really crazy poo poo the person is already incorporated and proven their loyalty

(1) it won't be public (2) congressional depositions don't work that way, the sides alternate 30 minute periods with (usually) staffers asking questions, without a time limit - and, from what i've seen, usually republicans just give up after one or two rounds with these types of witnesses because there's no point wasting time time in this format and any question they don't know the answer to is a risk. Volker's was over nine hours long

eke out posted:(1) it won't be public I would expect that republicans ask some pre-arranged questions to elicit specific talking points they plan to use, but then yeah - there's no point in deposing a friendly witness. generally you'll just ask a friendly witness any questions you need to clarify an answer that you think was unclear or to prod them to fix something they screwed up, so a deposition will be something like 7 hours for the adverse side and maybe five to ten minutes for the friendly side. i would expect more than the usual 5-10 minutes here because he's going to want to tell his side of the story but once you've gotten all of that out, then yeah no point
