I had to make a judgement call on whether or not to call the cops on a woman a few weeks back. I chose not to, but I really don't know if it was the right decision. I stopped at a red light, and there was a car in front of me. When the light turned green, the car didn't move, even after the normal time it takes people to get going. I'm so used to this though, since 99% of people are staring at their phones when they drive. So I honked the horn. Nothing. The car still didn't move. So I honked the horn again. Nothing. From where I was sitting, it looked like this person was staring down at her phone. So I pulled to the right side of her car, and I look over and I see this woman totally slumped over in her seat. I honk the horn again, but she doesn't move. So now I get out, and I knock on her window. She wakes up thankfully, but looks COMPLETELY out of it and doesn't look like she understands she's in the middle of traffic. I ask if she's ok, but then she looks at the traffic light and realizes what's going on and steps on the gas and leaves. I have no idea why she passed out. I just know that it took no more than 10 seconds for it to happen. She might have been working all night, maybe for 12+ hours or working multiple jobs and she was just too tired to be behind the wheel. Maybe she was on some kind of drugs, prescription or illegal, I don't know. But I could have taken her licence plate number down and called the cops, and I was very much tempted to. Except she was a black woman, and I am terrified to call the cops on a black person since the policy of so many cops regarding black people is to shoot first and ask questions later. But at the same time, I was severely conflicted because this woman was obviously not in a condition to drive and I only hope to God she made it home ok and didn't end getting into an accident or hurting someone else. It's hosed up that I had to debate what should be an obvious decision.

The narrative seems to skip really smoothly between "all cops are power hungry and murderous bastards regardless of race" and "cops are 100% white and racist" depending on the circumstances. Most of the time there's zero indication the speaker is even aware the two explanations are even substantially different in any way.

Poorly trained assholes with guns have access to the power to kill at will and if they decide to kill you, you have no recourse but to die unless you want to fight them in which case they'll kill you anyway. I try to be fair about this. I try to say 'for every murderous prick there are a dozen good cops who don't get highlighted for doing their best to keep people safe'. One response to the “bad apples” argument you make is that where are those 12 good cops every day while their bad cop buddy is doing bad guy things? Those 12 are the guys who should be fixing this from the start, not standing shoulder to shoulder in a “thin blue line” to protect each other from scrutiny. If there is a bad cop, and he’s still a cop, then there are no good cops.

I live in St Louis. Because of political poo poo and racism dating back to before the Civil War, what would be one urban “city limits” boundary in any other city is a small urban core called City of St Louis surrounded by 88 different municipalities. Among them is one you might have heard of in recent-ish news, it rhymes with Ferguson. There are enough police departments that you could get fired for being a trash cop once a year and make more than a lifetime worth of career as a cop out of it.
