When creating a character, it's good to keep in mind:

Volition (under Psyche) is your Morale skill and Endurance (under Physique) is your health points skill. If these are low, you will die more easily so be warned. I don't think I will do a glass cannon build to start with, before I know what to do. Later playthroughs maybe.

I still expect my character to die on day 1. In hilarious ways.

All reviews point to Yes; It's a Game Of The Year, best RPG of all time, a masterpiece etc.

Hmm, how shall I post today?

I'll be amazed if there aren't some bugs with quests not updating since when you have intricate stuff with lots of choices and possible consequences, it's so easy for something to not trigger.

Some reviews are comparing the writing favourably to ps:t. Even if that is hyperbolic, that being the comparison people go to is high praise.

Everything I've seen points to it being very good with maybe a little bit of clunkiness and overambition on the side. Given I haven't actually played the game or even just seen it in its entirety, I don't really have deeper comments than that, but I think this one will be picked apart and looked at for a long time.

"The faster you use your cooldowns, the faster you can use them again"
i literally watched 20 hours of the game streamed and can confirm it is better written than planescape (especially the pacing of the writing, no huge walls of text here) and close to bug free (one major one 45 hours into the game following a specific dialogue path that the devs are fixing)

it really does live up to the hype

"The faster you use your cooldowns, the faster you can use them again"
it’s amazing how well the inner voice/your skills talking to you system works for breaking up the text into shorter, more juicy bits versus ps:t’s occasionally dry storytime

Also keep in mind that too high Volition apparently pushes you into being a Boring Cop since it overrides your more 'out-there' impulses, while high Endurance apparently pushes you to Fascism since you're such an obviously superior specimen :allears:

Rhetoric is socialist. I don't know if we know the political inclinations of the other skills yet.

It's crazy that that's a sentence that makes sense to write.

All the abilities have their own personality, which has been one of their main ideas for the project.
The negative sides might even be surprising, like, say, Empathy. Sure, it helps you know what lines of questioning are distressing a witness. But then it'll push you towards, say, relaxing your chosen feminist tenets because really, that girl needs a Man before she becomes a spinster. And also on that note, the other guy she might possibly have liked? Yeah, it's best to manipulate him into having a strong negative view of her. Empathy just wants what's best for You.

From what I have read, any skill can be useful (although not all equally). but any skill can become a negative at high levels. Which makes sense when you consider that these are less "skills" than aspects of your personality. And people who take one aspect of personality to the extreme generally pay some sort of price.

Reading the dev blog, they mention a few times how they try to make skills have at least like 50 checks in the game.

I'm usually bad about min-maxing and making a "perfect" character in games, but on my first playthrough I'm going to go in completely blind and see what happens. I want to make Jack Reacher and just tough-guy my way through problems.

Some mechanical spoilers on Copotypes and politics (you can eventually see them in-game, but I don't believe you have the knowledge upfront at the start).

There are four political philosophies accounted for: Communist, Fascist, Ultraliberal, and Moralist.
There are also four Copotypes: Superstar, Apocalypse, Sorry, and Boring.
You can also track how often you try Good Cop/Bad Cop and exercise Honour.

There's probably at least one Ability that's particularly tied to each.

couldn't help but to think that this concept is hilarious in such a game

then you find out that a "Glass Cannon" build is Electrochemistry max and the game acknowledges this, if so, GOTD

I've been browsing the subreddit for the game, and have come across a couple of cool little anecdotes from someone who got an early copy:

quote:

Been playing this one for a while now. It's the best game of the year. Took me around 45 hours to beat and I went with the 'Dumb but strong' build as I knew the game would be dialogue heavy and I wanted to see how much of a struggle it was. I 'died' by having a conversation with a fat intellectual 'mob boss' who persuaded me to give up my job as a detective and there was nothing I could do to stop it! 10/10.

quote:

On the flip side I saw someone make an extremely intelligent character who had a heart attack trying to get their tie off a ceiling fan in the first 15 minutes and died. So there's plenty of opportunity to die no matter the build.

Some physical attributes help in conversations, speed of response, intimidation etc.

quote:

Well for context, i've had the game for a fair bit now and I started playing as a 'sensitive' preset character, empathetic, weak, but interesting. I had a lot of dialogue based around 'hunches'. I got about 10 hours into the game and lost my way with it because I was travelling a lot IRL. I came back, the build of the game had updated to the review build and I started this 'Macho cop playthrough'.

The differences were vast.

I felt the hand-eye coordination helped me pull off some really big time-saving moves. I spent 2 hours going around a problem with 'Sensitive Cop' when I just ploughed through that problem with one strength check when I was a Macho Cop.

Another instance I found it useful was that I used my physicality to obtain an item I couldn't as Sensitive Cop, which gave me evidence to present to suspects, so a conversation that may have been an 'intellectual chess game' with my smart character was changed with my dumb character because i'd sourced this evidence I couldn't have gotten otherwise.

Honestly I didn't feel like it was a disadvantage and this game is really really good at making you feel like you're making the wrong choices a lot, because your character is a piece of poo poo.

My number 1 tip, and please heed my words, is roll with it. Choices I made and regretted came back round 4-5 hours later and I was glad I ended up not savescumming and I had a great time!

Moralists don't really *have* beliefs. Sometimes they stumble on one, like on a child's toy left on the carpet. The toy must be put away immediately. And the child reprimanded.

It should be dropping at 10 AM PST when Steam updates daily, so unless you have a time machine or Steam is doing something funky with timezones it's unlocking in approximately 1 hour 16 minutes.
