My Death Guard are back on my work bench since the recent Goonhammer article inspired me. I recently picked up a box of Blightlord Terminators and some Deathshroud. Unfortunately no shops around me had any Death Guard Green spray at all, which is what my paint scheme uses primarily.

Decided to try out some of the Vallejo Air paints I got, and IDF/IAF Green is reasonably close to Death Guard Green. It's a little lighter, but after a heavy wash of Agrax Earthshade it's pretty close.

Normal paint scheme using Death Guard Green Spray on the left, Airbrush on the right.

Man, I think these both look great. Your highlighting lines are so clean on both of them. I really like the airbrushing color on the right!

I got a little more work done on this guy last night. Nearly done with him, just going for a tabletop standard. I messed up his belly a bit, so i'll have to glaze some death guard green back to bring it back up.

I've spilled liquid styrene cement so many times that I bought a special holder to sit the bottle in to reduce the chances of doing it again.

You spill it on one of those green healing mats and it strips off the white lines instantly.

Would appreciate opinions on shade/contrast here. I’m going for a pretty pale yellow for my bad moonz. ive used flash gitz yellow over white and a wash of cassandora yellow, then dry brushed with a really pale colour. I then went into the recesses between panels and carefully put in a sepia wash. I like it, but idk if something even darker (ag. earthshade) would look even better, or would it be too much?

Thanks! I just followed Darren Latham’s “How to paint faces on miniatures” video. Just make sure your paint is very thin and don’t load up your brush otherwise you’ll loose control. There’s no real trick to the eyes, you’ve just got to go for it (took me three attempts for this face.)

I've used that video as a guide myself. I find that the contrast between the Cadian Fleshtone and Fleshshade is too steep and doesn't look very natural when I do it. I think you're right though, and the key is to keep the coats super thin.

Parsing sage, rotating time

I'm going to take my first plunge into putting a serious effort into bases, beyond just slapping Martian Ironcrust on it and calling it done, and I want to take a dive into the deep end, by not using any pre-made, store-bought materials. Of course, that's a bit daunting, so I've got a few questions for the goonmind.

1) When making flocking out of sawdust, I gather that going for a variety of colours is the way to go. I'm going for a autumn woodland theme, so what's a good ratio of brown/green/yellow/orange?

2) How viable is it to use dried herbs, tea, tobacco from cigarettes etc. as fallen leaves?

3) When using super-glue and baking soda for dirt, should I paint an undercoat first, or will that mixture cover up any color?

Thanks in advance, guys :)

1. However much you think is appropriate. If it's farther into autumn, go for less green and more the other colors. A safe best is an even 1:1:1:1 split, with adding more or less colors to the mix as you feel is needed. It's probably best to keep the colors separate, with one single container having a pre-mix of colors.

2. I can't speak of the others, but I use dried tea for flock all the time. You'll want to have used the tea beforehand (aka get it wet) and let it dry fully before using it for anything. For me, that process is laying the tea leaves out on a piece of tin foil on the counter for 24 hours or so, spread out thinly so that it dries quicker and more evenly.

Note that different types of tea will give you different types of flock, as well as if it's big loose-leaf tea or the cheaper finely-ground kind. Ceylon tea, for instance, can look like clumps of dead and molding tree leaves if you're getting the cheaper kind from like a dollar store. Similarly, peppermint tea can look like tough crab grass-like clumps. I tend to go for the cheaper kind you can get in bulk, since that's often much more finely-ground and that suits my model needs just fine.

Finally, after gluing the tea leaves down, seal it in with some watered-down PVA. This will keep it from falling off and help prevent discoloring.

3. You shouldn't have to paint an undercoat. Just painting directly over it should be fine.

By the way, if you want a DIY dirt mix, I recommend making your own. It just requires sand, PVA glue, craft paint like Folk Art or Americana, and a bit of water. Combine them in a small container and mix it thoroughly, adding a bit of whatever ingredient you think it needs more of (usually PVA and/or water). Get it to a slimy, easily-spreadable mix and you've now got your own texture paint for basing.
