I live in a super righty TX suburb and feel it's more of an economic strata thing than a lefty righty thing. Even in this football crazed state and town increasingly I see the well off educated people I work with here not willing or eager for their kids to play football because of brain injury considerations.

I think in a generation if it's around football will be mostly played by poor kids, mostly minorities and the white kids who play will probably be poor instead of the well off suburban ones we see now.

I mean, these folks love the IDEA of their son being a star quarterback or whatever but are increasingly unwilling to risk the physical/medical price that must be risked.

That matches with the poll I found tying people's support for their kid playing football with their income.

I swear I saw one with a political cross tab but any search for football and Republican/Democrat returns so much conservative media outrage poo poo that I can't find it.

Yeah, I thought about that when I originally posted it, and I suspect denying it leans Republican, but I'm skeptical at that being the primary division.

Has Stern pulled a Jimmy Kimmel? I saw a CBS Sunday Morning segment on him and he seems much different than he used to be. I can’t imagine he’d be able to pull off the lesbian porn-loving shock jock thing forever, but it was a real surprise how thoughtful he was.

Or does he still use the same old persona on radio?

He started going to therapy some years ago and has come out pretty vehemently against his old personas. I dunno if he's apologized for them but he's definitely said he isn't proud of what he used to do: https://www.washingtonpost.com/life...7766_story.html

I can't find the piece I read this in, but the crux of it was that football is seen as a surer ticket to a college education for athletically gifted boys in black communities than in white communities.

So it's much more of an economic divide than a political one (though obviously income and politics relate,) but even more broadly it relates to race and how a racist education system gives white students more paths to success than black ones.

(there's even a race breakdown within the sport itself. The positions that we perceive as "white positions" (kicker, quarterback, punter) are disproportionately white because there are so few relative spots for them on a roster. That means that there's a lot of pressure for prospective players at those positions to talk to specialty trainers or go to camps for those positions— which are very expensive, therefore favoring wealthier (and therefore generally whiter) students.)

Yeah, Pete Sessions lost his Congressional seat off of a combination of Beto running a great campaign against Cruz and Trump induced rage by decent suburban people. But Trump is the driving force in all of that.

I went and canvassed for Beto during the campaign. The coordinator's home we met at like 80 percent of everyone there was a first timer canvassing like me, 80 percent of them were women, and like 90 percent the primary motivation was "gently caress Donald Trump".

He had a fantastic interview on Conan O'Brien's podcast, Conan Needs a Friend. He still slipped in some blue material here and there but he knew it's mostly schtick at this point and he's more into having honest conversations with celebrity guests. No clue how the Sirius show is going though.

Really recommend the podcast, it's very raw and funny.

It's why I don't think TBI will kill football, at least not for a while, because it won't be the kids who go on to play in the NFL that'll get pulled by concerned parents. Also poor risk evaluation skills and the hope of getting out of generational poverty will still have many disadvantaged kids participating.
