I did the same w. a 4-2-2-4 start.

Started the game, woke from my drunken stupor, put my pants on, flailed at the fan, had a heart attack, and dropped dead on the floor (after clicking the "Ah, sweet darkness." (or whatever it was) dialogue choice).

I haven't laughed that hard at a game in quite a while. Started again with the same character, and am 4 hours in now. You have to play a bit cautiously with low physique and psyche...

The writing and overall feel of this game is amazing. I thought I'd really miss some sort of active combat system, but I really don't.

I was just going to ask about skill checks. To what extent do they function as "i win" buttons like in most other rpgs?

Moralists don't really *have* beliefs. Sometimes they stumble on one, like on a child's toy left on the carpet. The toy must be put away immediately. And the child reprimanded.

Kim is my buddy who I nerd out with about cool machines and I don't want to disappoint him...

My drama skill told me to do something, claiming it was a great idea.

It was NOT a great idea and my drama apologized afterwards.

Most of the time skills are just there to pipe up during dialogue trees and offer extra options by passing passive checks. (These are not necessarily options you want to choose.) If you get a white skill check option and fail, you won't be able to pursue that check again until you either put a skill point into the relevant skill or you find some other way to unlock the check (like, say, you hear that there's a special way to open a door from someone). A red skill check option can only be taken once, but does not necessarily block progress if you fail (sometimes failure is the "better" outcome and success is the "worse" outcome).

just had a softlock after the (day 1-2 spoilers) damaged ledger note event

my pardner finished talking to me and I never got a prompt to close the conversation

so it's a really good idea to have a couple manual saves, but you also need to resist savescumming skill checks

blizzardvizard posted:

psyche and phys are the less-safe stats to set to 1 because they give you your health bars; you heal when you sleep (in a bed) and also from some events, but that doesn't matter if you have 1 health out of a maximum of 1 and are thus entirely reliant on heal items auto-rescuing you from death

otoh you can get the health bars up to 2 by tossing in a skill point, which is slightly less than 1/6 as valuable as a stat point, so

Edit: Ultra-wide resolutions will be patched in later (I don't know when, or what resolution big screen tvs have), text can be resized (3 options from what I saw), no need for quick mouse movements, you're basically picking conversation options or moving your character with mouse clicks without any urgency.

Volition is kind of boring a lot of the time, but don't let that fool you into thinking it's always right, or always boring! Volition has its own brand of bad decision making due to being so goddamn centrist and tedious.

On the other hand, Volition has COMPLETELY changed an entire dialog tree by basically calling out every single one of my other skills as idiots.

This game is loving incredible, is what I'm saying.

Edit: loving hell did we get the idea to speak about the same event at the exact same time, poster above me? What the heck?

if im gonna do more than one playthrough, ideally one with a fairly goofy focused strengths/weaknesses char and the other a more run of the mill generalist who feels ashamed for being a loser trying to get his life together, does anyone here think that it matters what order i do these in? presumably the first guy might struggle with the actual case more than the second

I get the impression that you'll learn things and have a fun rollercoaster even if you're bad at pursuing the case.

I also get the impression that any stat combination has a good shot at the case, just through different routes. This may not apply to any skill combination, mind you. :v: I'd actually do the goofball first, so you don't consciously / subconsciously know some of the ways to get evidence without advice/skillchecks from doing things reasonably correctly on a competent trying-to-be-competent detective.
