Heretic is very good but I would say it's kind of heretical :haw: to put it over Doom. I like the fantasy setting and weapons, the enemies are a little more interesting, and the inventory system is a definite plus but I dunno, the game feels kinda toothless. It's very easy a lot of the time save for like, Iron Liches which are only a horrible pain because of those loving tornadoes. I also feel like the map design isn't nearly as good, although I do like the colorful settings of Heretic a little more. I have a weak spot for fighting demons and monsters in giant cathedrals with stained glass and everything. It's a shame episode 2 isn't nearly as fun to look at visually IMO.

Edit: Also hard disagree on the rocket launcher thing. The Doom rocket launcher is great! Just... not Quake great, probably. The issue is that a lot of enemies in Doom are bullet sponges and so it always takes a few rockets to drop one but I've always felt like it's a rapid fire death machine, a little more like the Devastator in Duke 3D than the RPG Launcher.

Last weekend marked a milestone in my life: I beat Doom (Ultimate Doom) fully for the first time. It's still an undeniable classic and there's a real Nintendo-like attention to detail that just makes engaging with Doom feel great. Thy Flesh Consumed kind of sucked, maybe half of it was salvageable, but I want to say Doom is like 70% a perfect game, 20% good, 10% "why the gently caress wasn't Perfect Hatred a secret level?" Some gripes, the rocket launcher is kind of poo poo. Duke3D raised the bar too high for rocket launchers because Doom's rocket launcher feels like farting explosive Nerf rockets. I also think the level designer's leaned way too hard on harmful floors. That poo poo's not fun, guys!

If we're talking that I just beat the base of Plutonia last night for the first time, on bitch difficulty granted (Hurt Me Plenty) without pistol-starting, but still it was a great thrill and I definitely feel like I've learned a lot about how to truly 'git gud' at DOOM's design philosophies.

Time for the secret levels though, wish me luck.

Disagree on the Rocket Launcher. Plutonia is designed to make a lot of use of Rockets for picking off far-off enemies and believe me you will grow to appreciate it. Yeah it definitely lacks the "oomph" factor of its successors, but the hadouken/ki-blast style fire is so charmingly early 90s and it does the job it was designed to do very well.

I agree the Doom rocket launcher isn’t very satisfying. It does fine damage but its niche is long range combat against beefy enemies and Doom 1 doesn’t have very much of that compared to Doom 2: maps tend to be pretty small and most of the tougher enemies just aren’t in the game. It’s also fairly slow to shoot and its blast radius is smaller than you might guess. I think the Quake RL is just right as an improvement to it.

I recently beat Doom 2 for the first time without cheats (beat it many times as a kid that way). Definitely has some low spots but the SSG never makes it not fun, unlike spots of Doom where you have to use the regular shotgun on bulletsponges like cacos. Once I beat it I went straight into No rest for the living (which apparently they cut from the new console ports??) and enjoyed the hell out of that wad. Challenging, but in a much more fun way that ep4 was. No backpacks that I could find meant it was pretty challenging through the first few levels. Cool level design too.

I think the weak splash damage is my biggest issue. You have to be accurate and unless you fire while an enemy is in the middle of its attack it'll just lazily drift to the side. The rocket launcher ends up being a slow sniper rifle except it'll kill you if a lost soul is anywhere within your view.

Also the tome in Heretic may be the greatest FPS power up. It's like getting berserk except it applies to every weapon and now your machine gun explodes into spiky balls.

Only issue I'm having so far is that items seem to disappear between loads?

That is true. Check out DOOM 2 and Plutonia for how they make that design work in the weapon's favor. Agreed it is definitely more of a liability in DOOM1 than anything.

I just ripped through Cyberden like it was an average level. That is a testament to how much Plutonia conditions you to deal with its bullshit. Go 2 It has got a lot to live up to now.

It's a good anti-hoarding behavior.

Also with the wings it's really easy to break a level's intended flow, so stripping it away is necessary for gameplay.

Yet another big ol' eyecandy wad but also IMO really fun so far. I like the way it opens up as you go, lots of interesting places to fight in, some good Doom-appropriate verticality, you can observe various paths and areas before you actually get into them, some fun punchy replacement sound and weapon effects... just good stuff all around.

I'm a little wary of thousand-monster maps and I'm only about 300 into this one. But so far it kind of seems to be designed as a series of distinct spaces/encounters anyway, just not with intermission screens.

I just did a replay of Jedi Outcast and posted a review a few months back in this thread.

My take? The game has it's moments but it is constantly trying to find ways to piss you off.

First two levels without the force powers are not bad,it's a great homage to Dark Forces

When you DO finally get your light saber you are tossed into Nar Shadda - which is honestly one of the worst series of levels in FPS history. Be prepared to constantly dodge one-hit kill snipers you can;t see and dodge thermal grenade spam!

The game does get much better after that, especially as you become an unstoppable god later in the game. The light-saber fights with the Reborn/Shadow Troopers are loving fantastic. The level design is meh though. It's a series of gun-metal grey corridors with confusing pathways and you end the game in a swamp with a low field of view. For all of the action, there are equally long sections where you are running around these empty grey corridors trying to figure out where the gently caress to go next. It "nails" the look of the original trilogy though.

I have heard that Jedi Academy fixes many of these issues with a better focus on the lightsaber combat and level design, but I haven't had a chance to give it a playthough.

Yeah, the Mordeth Award is just for a project that took the longest from its inception to its release, but generally if it's well known enough to even end up on the Cacowards you can assume it's probably not trash. Otherwise no one would care enough to note "Oh poo poo that finally came out?"

I reviewed it the year it came out. It's very much YMMV due to different authors having different ways of approaching the "In Name Only" concept. Some wanted more realistic city levels since Doom II is generally thought of as lacking them; others went totally abstract. Its MAP07 replacement, composed entirely of triangles, was popularly reviled. The same author made the really cool castle level for "The Citadel", though. In any case it's definitely inspired and has a ton of great gems. Mouldy of Going Down made cool levels for MAP20, MAP25, MAP28, and MAP30. Xaser also crafted a wicked cool map to replace "Wolfenstein". I really liked the moving, skin-city aesthetic of "The Living End".

Jedi Academy is a lot better because it kinda avoids a lot of the gimmick bad mid 2000's designs that Jedi Outcast leans into a bit too heavily. Outcast has a ton of complicated switch hunts and annoying puzzles, a handful of turret sections and even a forced stealth section. Academy's got a lot more varied level design with the planet hopping campaign, and it's one (skippable) gimmick level is one where the floor instantly kills you.
