I wonder if any voters will actually care about this. GOP primary voters maybe but I can’t imagine how that caring will manifest - will they vote for all the ET people or vote for moderates instead?

GOP: Government is broken and just makes things worse! Also GOP: lmao we're going to break the gently caress out of this I mean someone good at politics could probably make something of this but I don't think there is anyone in Texas capable of it

I think the general recriminations and distrust sown here is going to be the real problem for the state party https://twitter.com/edwonkkimmy/status/1184130755154325507 This strikes me as correct. It's good gossip for Texas pol junkies and will probably make some enemies but if there's one thing the Republicans are good at it's setting aside their extreme personal dislike and hatred of another person to vote for them because they are Rs. Also you have to remember that MQS knows the convo is being recorded so he's being way more circumspect than he'd be if he was the one getting secretly recorded. zoux fucked around with this message at 16:44 on Oct 15, 2019 |

Well when you campaign on lowering property taxes, but have no real authority to lower property taxes, you demonize the tax collectors.

Now there's 2 individuals nicknamed Speaker Boner to keep track of. At least one is retired now. Anyways, while it's not new, I enjoyed playing around with 538's Gerrymandering Atlas. Texas, theoretically gerrymandered Democratic, would give them 5 Dallas seats, 5 Houston seats, 3 Austin seats and a San Antonio seat. It's a fun little fantasy. Meanwhile a fair map would probably be a gain anywhere from 0-6 seats relative to now depending on which map and election outcome variance. But since Texas doesn't allow statewide ballot measures, I'd guess fair maps in other states are more interesting. Geographic distribution, with Democrats clustering in cities, fucks Democrats in countless states, often forcing a Democratic gerrymander just to get outcomes that match the partisan breakdown of the statewide vote. Ohio is the most prime example of this. Texas is actually less so than many states, probably because it's so suburban and rural.

I'm sort of bummed out I spent the summer reading some of the big spoilers, so some of it is not surprising. But months into this, I'm still in shock that Bonnen would be this dumb to assume he was not being recorded. My boss is still betting he'll win the Speakership again, but I wouldn't go that far.

Turns out he was an activist for Open Carry Texas, the group that got into it with Bonnen earlier this year at his house, and now with the MQS tape I had to know what he thought. Was it this square-faced motherfucker? Because the reason he pushes so hard for "constitutional carry" is that he has a criminal record that prevent him from getting a CC permit. He's been known to get real threatening with lawmakers who don't do what he says. Dude is bugfuck nuts, moreso than others of his libertarian ilk. Apparently he's way into marijuana legalization now. I say he doesn't deserve the benefit of the doubt because it's Texas, and I would assume 99% of people have a gun in their house specifically for defending themselves during a break in. I can't imagine what police training is like to make an officer that scared at checking houses that he shoots at the first visible human inside.
