The print quality can get really loving dire on the original runs so it's not like there's a perfect solution. And that's without factoring for the yellowed paper and other damage to the source.

I just remember checking out a Legion of Superheroes Showcase and only getting halfway through it, even though I love Silver Age comics. Something about that stuff not being in color robs the material of some vital quality for me, which sucks because those volumes are cheap and the Archives are much more expensive. I have two House of Mystery and three House of Secrets Showcases I thought I'd get into but again, the black and white throws me off and makes the experience not as fun. Whereas I could and have read thousands of pages of black and white indie comics without a problem at all. I think I associate superhero and Big 2 comics with color, so seeing them in black and white just doesn't work for me. I own almost all the EC annuals that bundled 5 issues together and those were all color and only $9.95 or $11.95, I don't know why DC or Marvel couldn't do some similar kind of reprint. Paying $50 for four issues of Superboy in an Archive format is dumb.

I like manga, but I have trouble reading it for very long because I find my eyes straining themselves out from reading it sometimes. To be honest, I think artistically comics have gained so much from not being on the cheapest paper possible, that I can't imagine any modern artist really wanting to go back to newsprint.

Weirdly Conan is one of the few that works for me in b&w, maybe because of all the ssoc or just because the art is usually pretty darn good.

Buscema's linework is very bold and looks great in black and white. And the coloring on the conan book was some of the worst. I remember reading magazine-collected french prints of Marvel Mags when I was a kid and Hulk looked amazing in black and white, simply because of that strong, confident inking and linework.

I just try to put like with like, and the book size, format and weight dictates where it goes to some extent. The essentials are sorted mostly alphabetically but trying not to split runs across shelves so you get some weirdness.

Who was waiting for that? I picked all these up in a kijiji lot a few months ago for a ridiculous price. My biggest complaint is that the bindings are real bad. A bunch had to be reglued, and I’ve got another dozen duplicates to sell which almost all have the same problem. Oh and my other minor complaint - different prints print different issues. So I keep two copies of essential Spider-Man 4, Avengers 1, and Xmen 2 because they have different books in them. Very dumb.

I actually do kinda really want to read the Dazzler comics. But in color, because I'm assuming comics about a disco lady who makes light shows out of sound works better in color than in black and white.

For superheros especially it just seems like color is so important to what I consider comics, it's real deprivation to get through the black and white volumes and they don't stick with me as well. How much more expensive is color than black and white anyway? Is there some reason Marvel or DC couldn't do print on demand for reprinted stuff?

Today I answered a reference question for Kelly Thompson on Twitter. She had been agonizing since 3 AM, trying to think of an actor, but she had only the vaguest clues -- she couldn't think of a single thing he had been in. She had hundreds of followers trying to name every possible person, but she knew who they weren't. I showed up and nailed it, and she was pretty happy with me. "Who's that guy from that thing?" is one of my favorite reference questions to answer as a librarian. Years ago, I figured out some Goon here on the SomethingAwful dot com forums was trying to think of William Fichtner, and today it was Craig Bierko. She promised to send me signed comics!

Surely, between that, the Claremont/Miller mini, and little OGNs and maybe MCP arcs, one could fruitfully stuff a few Essentials without much filler. Yeah, I've posted before how I'm going through all of Wolverine currently. I'm in the 160s and there's far more good than bad, I only just recently skipped my first issues thank to a nonsensical Liefeld two issue arc.

awhile back I read the first Hellboy Omnibus, and I pretty much thought the movies did it better. But recently I found the second omnibus for cheap and figured I'd give it a shot, and turns out the Hellboy comics are pretty good. They got something going on. Unfortunately there's already little editors notes telling me they're referring to stuff that happened in other comics, so I guess if I'm gonna keep going with it I need to find a reading order chart.

Speaking of Omnis not collecting enough, does anyone know if there's any update on Atomic Robo? I've been reading the collections that have 3 trades in them. They have Vol 1, 2, 3, which have 1-3, 4-6, and 7-9. But it seems that there's trades volume 10-12 out. I'd rather get a Omni volume 4 if one is happening, but going by the Wikipedia release dates, it should have happened by now it seems. Does anyone know anything about this series?
