I read the article and it’s a little creepy. Apparently he was already a sex offender and the cops sent him a Facebook friend request as the 14 year old girl. This means either the cops are sending friend requests on fake profiles to random people to see what crimes they commit, or they’re trying to bait sex offenders into reoffending.

And that baby's name was Tara Cotta. I think by law of finders keepers, they must contractually raise this new zombaby. Life is funny sometimes, you win some you lose some.

I'm not super strong on cops baiting people but if you can be baited into wanting to walk 351 miles to gently caress a child then maybe the cops didn't gently caress this one up.

It’s just a sting operation. If it crosses the line into entrapment, that would be bad, but the bar from entrapment is quite high.

I may be incorrect, but I think "entrapment" is when they put you in a situation where you basically have no choice or are tricked into breaking the law. So pulling over people leaving a bar and testing them for DUI isn't really entrapment, but locking someone in a room and demanding they give you $20 and you hand them some weed is.

It’s not quite that limited. The case that “resurrected” entrapment happened to involve a pedophile. The Postal Inspectors went much further than sending him a friend request. IIRC they actually sent him what amounts to softcore child pornography, but Wikipedia’s summary only describes the text of the “advertisements”. quote:Included was a questionnaire attempting to gauge the respondent's interest in various paraphilias, including pedophilia and ephebophilia. Jacobson indicated an "above average" interest in the latter, especially between males, but also stated he was opposed to the former. The USPS decided he was not a promising target and left him alone [for a time]. Well we know he owned a thesaurus.

Yeah, generally shooting black people who are just living their lives in their own homes. I mean, it would be nice if the police were doing better things but it's usually worse things.

There is so much recidivism among child sexual abusers that a sting might well spare actual children. (I’m always going to be biased on this one, as someone who was assaulted by a multiple offender, so I might not be the best person to evaluate this story.)

I have a couple really young cousins (12, 13) who are currently going through a stage of trying to act much older and one got a 19 year old boyfriend (yikes) through Facebook. The fact is, actual young girls sometimes add random people on Facebook and can be tricked into being in a “relationship” with some weirdos. So I’m fully supportive of police stings through Facebook, as long as they don’t continually pester someone into acting out when they otherwise wouldn’t have done anything.

Maybe it passes legal muster, and I have no real sympathy for a 30 something dude walking 300 miles to have sex with a 14 year old, but it sure feels dirty that the police friend requested him.

A friend request on Facebook to a known predator from a profile claiming to be a 14 year old is about as entrapment-y as sending a plainclothes cop door to door asking if anyone wants to buy meth. Like it's a little pushy and weird, but if that's all it takes, I don't have much sympathy. What I'm really curious about is if they did this because they saw his Facebook profile showed he was already friends with a bunch of kids. There was an episode of the Small Town Dicks podcast about a guy who did something similar, and apparently he would spam out Facebook friend requests to literally thousands of kids, knowing that only some will accept and of those that accept only some will talk with him and of those only some will be vulnerable to his ... predation. In that case, a mother pretended to be her daughter after the guy randomly friended the daughter and basically gift wrapped a conviction for the cops, but if they saw he was friending kids, I have zero problem with what they did.
