the live album plague mass is super cool and intense and gives a pretty good idea of what her earlier stuff is like. if you like spooky sounds and her vocals then most of the other early albums are good, special shout out to the 1984 self titled lp which basically sounds like power electronics with her doing vocals, it kicks rear end. the piano blues stuff isn't really my cup of tea but maybe check out some of the more recent live albums for that style.

I would really like more songs that sound like Up On The Sun by Meat Puppets. I love the riff, I love the playful psychadelic imagery, I like the chill "beer and weed" as Curt Kirkwood describes it. I love the album as a whole, so anything reminiscent would be cool.

Do you know much Firehose? Not so sure about psychedelic imagery, but the overall vibe is pretty similar to the Meat Puppets.

the vocals arent a lot like meat puppets at all but the band forests from singapore do that kind of playful noodly guitar (and bass) stuff. i may be completely off base because i havent listened to that meat puppets album in its entirety in a long time but i like to plug forests any time i can.

A lot of The Desert Sessions has a beer and weed vibe, and definitely psychedelic. I think Kirkwood may have even been on some of those recordings. There’s a lot of weird poo poo in there though.

Some of J Mascis’s stuff leans that way, but his recent solo efforts are pretty melancholy.

What do you specifically like? The LA version of grunge, the rock poet lyrics and bombastic front man, the killer loving bass lines? Can't think of another group that quite encompasses all of that but for the kinda-grunge feel, you could try Local H (As Good As Dead is a great place to start), for the rock poet lyrics / front man stuff, you could try the band Scott Weiland clearly idolizes - The Doors (first two albums specifically). STP is basically grunge Doors and with a bass instead of an organ something like Strange Days would have fit right in on Purple.

There's also the obvious Pearl Jam and Alice in Chains. STP were heavily accused of ripping off every big grunge band (especially on Core), to varying degrees of accuracy.

Another band that just came to mind for a similar big, intense arena-rock energy with a grunge flavor is Mother Love Bone. And yeah, Soundgarden's first two albums in particular.

What the-
I've recently found a band called Sleep Token and I am absolutely hooked on this dudes vocals and just the way everything builds yet is almost minimalistic? I have no idea how to classify this band other than good. The Night Does Not Belong To God has a long buildup towards the vocals but everything just kinda layers in a way I'm not used to. Jaws does something similar but is far heavier than the first song. A song off their new ep/album called Higher is one of my favorite songs I've ever heard and is currently in my top 10.

Is there anything similar to this group, either in style or just vocally? Cause holy drat this singer.

Please recommend me some real desert mood music. So far I've got:
Earth - The Bees Made Honey in the Lion's Skull
Tinariwen - Aman Iman
The Pixies - Silver (but that's just 1 song)

This album (Atardecer) by Friends of Dean Martinez is very good.

There's also a recent country compilation that might fit the bill but I'm blanking on it. If I can think of it within a reasonable time I'll edit this post.

Edit but not for the country album - this song off Angel Dust by Faith no More always made me picture a desert setting:

Third for Kyuss. About half the band was in Queens of the Stone Age at the beginning, so maybe check out their early work, but don't get your hopes up too high.

I'm looking for electronic ambient music for background noise purposes. Something like that

https://youtu.be/yttwjrDnAxI

but with a little bit more variety.

E: variety in the sense that it's more than just a 5 min loop stretched to 3 hours. I'm ok with a simple pad that drones on for minutes.

might be a bit too much more variety but my work/background music playlist is just blip-bloopy videogame music like Ben Prunty's soundtrack for FTL and scntfc's soundtrack to Oxenfree. those two might fit what you're looking for.

The tl;dr is that Ulver took a lot of inspiration from early 80s synth pop and industrial on that particular album. The AllMusic review breaks out the influences pretty much track by track and is your best bet for starting out.

Ulver is a very difficult band to recommend because their sound is so wildly inconsistent from album to album. No matter your tastes you're going to find something in their catalog you like, but it might only be one song.
