Boss has climbed up the assholes of a bunch of people after a project hit some bumps last weekend because of communication problems. Between IT, vendors and people onsite, we all had different ideas of who would be moving and where. It was all cleared up after a bit, although it will delay dragging the old network rack out of the room and getting rid of all the old wiring.
I ran into some issue with analog wiring but the vendor was able to send their phone guy over to help get it going without having one of our guys drive for 3 hours. He didn't quite get what they want, but this project is going on for another 4-6 months, so no real hurry. However, boss rants to me about why a coworker didn't drive up for the weekend and says this guy had "plans." No poo poo the guy had the plans, this weekend thing was dropped on us a week before the move, and I was ok with going up, he wasn't.
But the real kicker is my boss has been working remote since early September from a campground while hunting. He occasionally comes back to our building for meetings and such, then goes back out. He has also had about 2 fulls weeks off during this time. Months ago, he made himself lead on this project since its at a important corporate building. But now that decisions have to be made by people onsite, he's off in the woods somewhere. But still feels the need to make comments about others not working hard. Motherfucker has had 2+ weeks of vacation in the last 2 months, I've had one day. Not sure I want to hear his bullshit.

On a happier note: the cablers onsite brought some new Cat6 cables that are 28awg slim cables, and holy poo poo what a difference in the patch panel. Never thought my life would be such a dumpster fire I'm excited about patch cords, but here we are.

Outlook and its features for HTML email are terrible for writing point-by-point responses in discussions. Top replies are terrible, and even worse when combined with in-line comments/responses to specific points.
I hate communicating with vendors and needing to scroll up/down to read general comments in the top reply, and specific comments in colored text appended to the quoted mail.

We are under our third expansion phase and one thing being done is exchanging a warehouse fire exit into a door tall enough for a forklift to pass through.

The contractors worked all day on it yesterday and at quitting time they had the new doors hung but not the latches so they decided to bolt the doors shut. :argh:

Pissing me off: the most burned out person here, after having two days mostly off the phone for training, is throwing a temper tantrum and just sitting in his car and leaving us with basically half the staff we should have because we're already short-staffed and one person is on a client site.

I explained that it looks like the screen is broken, and that this usually is caused by dropping or crushing the laptop.

Then I set a mental timer to see how long it would take her to reply back that she did not drop or crush the laptop.

You need to give them an out to admit it but save face. Imply that physical damage caused it, but it could've been ANYTHING that did it and not specifically their incompetence.

I started using AzureAD groups for licensing today and man oh man that makes life so much easier. I don't need to teach our helpdesk guys how the O365 Portal works or anything, just "Add the user to the O365 - Licensing - E3 Group" and then in the next few Microsoft minutes it applies.

Not to mention the horrible thing they do with subject lines if you have a localized version. A simple "Re: <subject>" becomes a mess of "Re: Sv: Re: Sv: <subject>" when mixing English and Norwegian emails. UGH.

Oh yes. The best part is that the "Re:" prefix is historically intended to be from Latin, "in re", so you should not translate it for that reason alone. (This is not a new thing, I read this argument on Usenet twenty years ago.)

Pissing me off: the company I work for has been pushing software upgrades out of standard late-night maintenance windows (20:00ish) into graveyard windows (23:00). They just did this with our monthly outward-facing servers patching. I spoke with the other three people responsible for patching, and we agreed not to do this unless they gave us the next day off, and a comp day on top of it (our patch night is Wednesday). They all agreed. I reiterated to one of the guys, and he goes "why is everyone looking at me?" One of the other guys says "because you have a history of capitulation." He confirms that he is on board with the plan. Our boss talks to us about it, and I push back with "if you want us to do this, you need to give us a fair amount of time off for screwing up our sleep schedule." She pushes back with "this needs to be done," and I'm like "that's fine, but we need to be compensated fairly for it." Dude with the history of capitulation immediately pipes up and agrees to do it with just being allowed to work from home the next day. After this exchange, my boss immediately schedules a one-on-one with me following an afternoon meeting. When I pointed out to him the conversation we had earlier, and how hard he had folded, he just said "oh, I don't like holding a gun to somebody's head, and I'll get time with my kids tomorrow..."

Not pissing me off: capitulator--who I was going to be splitting patch duties with--will now be the only one doing patching on our public-facing servers, since I refused to do it. He did it last night, and was working from home this morning.

Never trusting that guy again, though. Hilarious thing is his start time is a couple of hours before mine, which means he's getting even less sleep than I would have been if I were doing the patching.

How much is windows licensing for two pdc's, a file/print server, for like 50 users? I am writing my boss a letter monday strongly suggesting we don't ditch windows.

Impractical practicality
Did an interview today. I’m feeling this strange emotion I think is called happiness?

I came to my current company because I needed a job fast and did not realize how awful graveyard schedules are. I will never ever ever work odd hours on a regular basis again. I started to realize I needed to escape like my body was yelling at me to fix this.

Just one interview a week and I’ll be free of my awful schedule and unhappy workplace. I know it can take a few tries so I doubt I’m lucky enough to be hired after one interview.

My PSA for the week: life is too short. Find alternate solutions that make you more happy.

It really depends on what you're running for servers. Microsoft switched to a per-core licensing structure for their Standard and Enterprise server offerings, and with 50 users you don't qualify for the Small business targeted Essentials server package. This also means that you'll need a CAL for each user or device that connects to your servers. Windows licensing can get really complicated really fast.

He wants to "haul cargo", presumably in space. I suggested he look at Elite Dangerous, but no that's too complicated. Instead he won't shut up about these Star Citizen propaganda videos.

"It's only $45" he says, as I wait to see how much he actually spends once he realizes he can't actually haul much cargo in the starter ship.
