Aramoro posted:Sorry, going back a bit. How do you know not 1 but 2 people who have drunk liquid nitrogen? Hanging out with a lot of science students. Liquid nitrogen was used for a lot of experiments (to cool down things), and was relatively easily available for this reason. During my studies, the department was expanding on promotion, and set up a team of students doing physics shows, basically experiments a bit more interesting than high school level intended to teach a bit but more importantly make STEM seem interesting. Experiments you can go with liquid nitrogen include superconductivity (basically cool down a copper pipe) or exploding coke bottles (a bit of liquid nitrogen in a bottle = boom), so this group had access to the liquid nitrogen. It turns out that people extrovert enough to go to high schools to host shows also like to party, combined with university and a tradition for students bars on-campus Thursday and Friday leads to dangerous situations. Often, Fridays would be spent making more and more elaborate bombs (putting bottles under water, burying them, throwing them from high buildings). It's a miracle nobody got seriously hurt. To tie it back to OSHA, the liquid nitrogen used to be stored behind a locked door in the basement of the department. To ease access, a smaller amount (still fricking huge tanks) were just unlocked and unmonitored in a hallway if you could get into the hallway and knew where to look for it. The (physical) key systems, however, did not have enough levels, so one day a friend and I, hosting a party at the neighboring math department, decided to go fetch some liquid nitrogen because the power was out and our beers were getting warm. My friend, an undergraduate maths student, had access to the physics department (due to office sharing) and I (a CS student) happened to know the route that would get us liquid nitrogen, even though this should not be possible at all. After a number of such incidents, including the one with a friend ending up in a hospital (during the graduation celebrations of one of the aforementioned show physicists, this friend was not the only one swallowing the stuff that evening, just the only one to swallow too much), they finally put it behind a proper lock and started keeping track of who came to pick some up. Universities are (used to be?) fricking death traps because of a healthy mix of trust in people to do the right thing, lots of alcohol, and vast overestimation of one's own abilities.

Speaking of that New Orleans Hard Rock site:quote:Crews on the site of the partially collapsed Hard Rock Hotel New Orleans were preparing Thursday to use explosives to demolish the two heavily damaged cranes balanced perilously on the building, a process that could take 24 hours. "We're gonna blow up the over 40-ton* cranes that are still on top of the collapsed construction site! NOTHING COULD POSSIBLY GO WRONG!" *Cyrano, do you know how big these fuckers actually are? I saw one article that I thought said the booms alone were 40 tons, but I have no idea what I'm talking about and that seems rather big.

I'm late to the party on this one but probably about 12 years ago when I was running the paintball field at that terrible summer camp, I was filling some of the marker CO2 tanks when the line ruptured and poured liquid CO2 all over my hand. I'm not sure what happened exactly, if nerves can just freeze and die but I definitely lost some feeling in my palm. It's the secret to why I'm so good at really loud highfives.

Shut up Meg posted:Did someone get their nuts caught in the gear shifter or something? For a start, lol. For seconds, I honestly don't know. I was laying out my samples from the day in the yard next to it on Sunday four weeks ago, when they tried to start it up. Smoke all the colours of the rainbow poured out of the top of it. The next day the fitters were out trying to get it going, and I heard them talking about how it would run but wasn't making any power. Could they need to have something fabricated up for it? I assume the same thing as you, that they'd jump through any hoops necessary to get it going.

Not making power? Like electrical? The alternator is dead or some where in the rats nest of the wiring harness its burned up. The alternator would probably be a quick fix so that's probably not it. Wiring harnesses are stupidly expensive so they might be having them trace the wires out to find the bad spot. Needs new tires.

Nahh, like "the engine runs but doesn't produce any power". Bogs down and sputters to a halt any time you try to make it do anything, like move the vehicle. And yeah, it probably needs new tires. That's the least of our problems right now though.

I got curious https://www.machinerytrader.co.uk/listings/plant-equipment/for-sale/list/category/1027/dozers-wheel/manufacturer/komatsu/model/wd900-3 A used one is only AUD 135,000. That's much less than I was thinking it cost. Perhaps for that price, they've got enough spare units that this one can sit around doing nothing?
