Liquid modelling putty would absolutely gently caress up your brushes, just at a slightly slower rate. You can also sand away the damaged plastic in much the same way so I don't think it's necessarily an advantage. Modelling putty can fall off the mini as well depending on which one you're using. I think modelling putty would be better for a more heavily textured look like zimmerit but light texturing like cast iron would be fine with some surface disruption using plastic glue. No reason not to use it if you have it though!
