Also the screaming fascist party getting humiliated is prima facie good news, but did anyone see how many first time voter votes the CPC got. The PPC basically functions to activate potential right wing votes that were not being engaged by the CPC (probably specifically targeting the ultra-racist conspiracy theorists that Trump activated), so I figure that's the way to actually measure their impact.

Maybe PPC was a failure because Bernier couldn't connect with the racists outside of Quebec as he forced them to balance their hate for French Canadians with their hatred for new Canadians.

the peepee party's popularity, like Kelly Leitch, was always artificially inflated by our commie lib media, who for some reason can't resist giving him an amount of coverage that was totally out of proportion to his actual level of support. https://twitter.com/_llebrun/status/1186483185732980737

if Canadians prefer standard colonial racism, if there isnt significant popular support for outright fascism in Canada, the commie lib media are doing everything they can to conjure it into existence

Good news: Hedy Fry is 78 years old -- she can't possibly have that many more elections left in her despite being impossible to defeat in Vancouver-Centre. Fun trivia fact I just learned: In addition to famously knocking off Kim Campbell, she has defeated three separate NDP MPs who have held the North Burnaby riding (which has changed names a bit over the years) on her home turf: 1997 - Bill Siksay (MP from 2004-2011) 2004 - Kennedy Stewart (MP from 2011-2018, current mayor of Vancouver) 2006 - Svend Robinson (MP from 1979-2004, just lost another stab at half the old riding tonight by 3%.) Will the seat get handed off to her son, Pete Fry (currently a Green councillor in Vancouver, second highest vote total in 2018)? Probably... Noting that Pete has run for the Greens provincially too. The Liberals capitalized on fear of a Scheer government to turn otherwise progressive ridings red, and Quebec doesn't like a man in a turban. Their vote distribution sucks

Echo Chamber posted:Just woke up to these election results. A lot of people voted strategicially to stop the Conservatives, but it also needs to be remembered that Canada has always been a highly regional country and this has always been a problem for the NDP because they traditionally tried to appeal for people's votes based on class. By 2000 the NDP was on the verge of dissolving when it was taken over by a Toronto city councillor named Jack Layton, who successfully pushed the party back into electoral contention while pushing the platform into the political centre. At the same time the Liberal party was experiencing difficulties and the Conservatives started winning elections. Layton capitalized on that by winning more and more seats until 2011 when his party had an unexpected breakthrough in Quebec, where the NDP historically wasn't competitive. This catapulted the NDP into second place and had people speculating that the Liberals were finished. However, Layton died unexpectedly after the election and the next NDP leader, Mulcair, was a huge dissapointment. The Liberals chose Trudeau as their leader and despite some early missteps they were able to beat both the NDP and Conservatives. That caused the NDP to dump Mulcair and go looking for a new leader, but there weren't many people interested in the job by that point as the NDP had dropped soundly back to third. Jagmeet Singh, an Ontario MPP, took the leadership without much of a fight and then proceeded to be extremely uninspiring if not outright incompetent all the way up until halfway through the campaign when he had a really good leadership debate performance. Unfortunately this didn't help him because most of his party's seats were still in Quebec as a legacy of the 2011 Layton wave and Quebecers weren't going to vote for a man in a turban. tldr: due to their wave election in 2011 the bulk of the party was concentrated in Quebec, which is particularly hostile toward a leader because of his ethnicity
