the coolest thing about marxism is that following it means you can ignore anything marx said because things have changed since 1869 or whatever

it's not a religion, it's a tool that needs it's head and it's handle changed out every so often

There are few things that infuriate me to the extent that Fred Hampton's murder does. What a loving country/world we live in that he was taken from us after only a year and change.

You can't "follow Marxism" while ignoring Marx. A basic understanding of Marx's theories is baked in to the discourse.

if you wanna be charitable, that poster said you can ignore anything marx said, so like any particular statement/position of marx's is open to revision. that's a lot different than just saying "ignore marx altogether."

my own opinion is that there are basic marxist concepts or theoretical precepts--like relations/forces/mode of production, the class struggle, historical change driven by changes in the aforementioned things, etc.--that one can't too easily abandon while still remaining a marxist. but there are a lot of things marx said that need to be, at a bare minimum, updated due to changes in the material conditions

Posting the Lassalle quote is too drat easy, it's shooting fish in a barrel. I'd go for one of his comments about the lumpenproletariat if I wanted to take that route.

But really I was more thinking about how if you explain the law of value to a lot of goons without explicitly telling them it's Marxist then they interpret it as conservative because it says that the capitalist system does actually allocate scarce resources and even says that some people's labour is more valuable (in the literal Marxist sense) than others, and this is viewed as some kind of neoliberal trick.

I am like 95% sure that Fred Hampton did not think you need to keep abreast of philosophical disagreements between various schools of academic Marxist theory.
