Somewhat heroic - yep basically in slc, let's definitely go for a run once this thing is working well!

I just bring the old battery to Costco and attempt to match size that way. The battery I got for ours was sounds like yours, it fit but not perfectly. Seemed fine.

Good to know. Not sure how to keep it tied down but I'll figure something out.

The van cranks but no start and the head unit (brand new) is dead. Also, it dropped from 12.5v to 10 in five minutes. Something is still hosed up.

Should there be some indication that the glow plugs are heating up? Not seeing anything

I wonder if there is something confusing to drivers about these HiAces. For me it was the main 20 (I believe) amp fusible link that completely killed dead the whole van, nothing electrical worked at all.
Battery swap and replacing that link fixed me right up. It's just odd that your HiAce experienced the exact same issues as mine in that it was running just fine when it left the ship, but the tow truck drivers get it and suddenly it gets hosed.

Are you getting any electrical power now? Also:

Holy poo poo yall. I just drove it around for 20min.

My wife may have mistakenly inserted the efi fuse in between fuse blocks, lmao. Replaced it and it fires right up.

Unfortunately I only get 11.8 v across the battery at idle and like 12.8 when revving, so I am pretty sure the port hosed my alternator up, but at least that's something definite and I know how to fix it!

Also the brand new head unit is totally dead.

It's in the 50s, I didn't see the telltale glowplug light but the thing started right up after replacing the efi fuse.

Now my issues are other poo poo that got fried, like I assume the alternator voltage regulator and the head unit which won't do jack poo poo. But lights and whatnot work, at least.

Also, if anybody knows what sort of alternator I could use for this, that would be rad because apparently the stock ones are hard as gently caress to get ahold of. Hoping there is crossover between the 1kz and some American model wrt alternator.

Hey, question for anyone that has imported one of these - what sort of license plate adapter bracket do you use?

Those seat covers appear to have been on since new. There are also pieces of plastic wrap type stuff on most of the walls.... so it seems the original owner of this really went all out. Whoever ends up buying it from me is gonna get basically new seats and interior!

Oh, and those headlights are totally HIDs, so I am officially now That Guy. If I were keeping it I would swap them out, but as it is I don't really care. Also, the license plate surrounds? Those are LED and glow. I'm basically the coolest guy on the road, just need some neon underglow to complete it.

Kaker or anyone ever seen one of these? Some Toyota navigation system. I assume it displayed on a screen but that isn’t in the van. Just got back into town this lite Ace delivered while I was gone. Bolted in good and has TONS of wiring hooked to it.

Yeah that resembles the very early cd and hdd based nav units, there were probably multiple GPS antennas that hooked into it.

Toyota actually pioneered that stuff, the toyota crown executive sedan had a full color nav system in 1987 based on fancy new 'cd-rom' tech, lol. I would imagine someone swapped the screen out for a more modern head unit? Weird they left the brains of the old one though.

BMW/ Mercedes / some Volkswagen campers, they have plenty of American and Italian imports too but I never look at those. All the g wagens I look at are RHD. Virtually no Japanese cars are lhd but I’ve seen a few campers like Toyota dolphins that were imported to japan and are LHD but few and far between.

EDIT:

Also Kaker or anyone who can help me with parts I know you've linked before and I will be going back through the thread to find, but this Lite Ace might need a clutch or a related part and I can't find squat on google that is not from Australia and most don't list this model.

If I want to do it now I gotta buy a pump from... *checks google* the UAE apparently. Fuckin a.

I know the camry was briefly offered w diesel here in the 80s, same with the hilux. I wonder if the clutch is the same.

Yoshi did let me know that Mat and Scott are cc'd on all his return emails in a wink wink nudge nudge way of telling me that Mat would see any complaints about his behavior. I see that as a plus because the guy should know that we all see how half assed he is.

Dave, it does look like the 2c/2ct was used in the 80s camry, so it may be possible to source a clutch in North America. Maybe someone else knows more, I don't have any experience with 80s diesel usdm Toyota. Googling tells me it was a 1.8l though.

This is one of the cons to importing some of these cars. I can't imagine many shops here wanting to deal with poo poo like a clutch job on a HiAce. If they do you'll end up paying out the rear end for hours as they're literally learning on the fly how to do it.....And hope they don't gently caress it up.

You might want to start shopping around for a good mechanic willing to do the work if you're gonna keep bringing in cars.

Mine is a 2.2 at least labeled on the back, everything I search for comes up with 1.8 parts and they are in Australia. At church with kids so can’t look up my details right now. Just freaking fed up. I asked for it to have clutch replaced in Japan and he was like it’s fine to get on the boat not worth sending. And even if I had a clutch I don’t know how to do it and no one in town is going to know. I’ll probably get it in my backyard and freaking cover it and deal with it in the spring I’ve got 8 other imports here or on the way to get sold

Ok, so it sounds like you have the 3c-t engine. It was used in the estima (previa) as well, I haven't been able to find much about the transmission but I wonder if it, by any stroke of luck, used the same transmission as the gas previas? Because those are relatively common in the states, and I imagine clutches are readily available.

If it at least uses the same trans as the 3c-t estimas of the era, this clutch may work?

EDIT:

Oh poo poo dude, if this link is to be believed, it is in fact the same clutch and it is shared with the 2rz gas engine

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Clutch-kit...K9T2IlM&vxp=mtr

You will want to verify this but that engine is in every 2wd 4cyl tacoma from 96 to 2001.

Get your chassis ID (aka the VIN) and punch it into here: https://partsouq.com/

It should bring you right to the schematic set for your Lite Ace for how it left the factory. Part numbers are worldwide, so if there is a Toyota part number it's the same no matter where on Earth you are.

Feed a belt to itself in order to break crank bolts loose :eng101:

All original belts now over 30 years old. They were all quite crispy and loosing their RIBs but structurally still together and not slipping. Timing belt looks pretty nice as far as I could see but old rubber is old rubber and has got to GO. Both the idler pulleys (outside and the one on the timing belt) had been flinging their grease from their bearings for a while, that's what the black stuff is under the cover. Elected not to do the water pump at this time as it's only 32,000 km young, and it is outside the timing cover. Can't wait to floor this thing now :getin:

Lite Ace nestled in the backyard, got a camping trip with kids this weekend so when I get back going to focus on selling cars that are good to go or simple to fix up and start researching through tips provided about clutch. It drives it’s just basically no clutch you let it all out and then rev the f out of it to move. No burning or grinding but definitely not fit for driving around town. In somewhat good news the Panasonic battery in it took and has held a full charge after a few days on the trickle charger. Sleep tight til I get To ya field tourer...

Check behind the head unit for a blown fuse. Aftermarket heads usually have on on the wiring or in the rear of the head unit itself. Probably blown when whatever fuckery happened to your van happened. Also check the fuse in the fuse block to, of course, and when you have the head unit out, check for 12V on both switched and constant. Most heads require both to actually work..

wilfredmerriweathr
Jul 11, 2005
Word, thanks for the heads up. I have one fuse for it that is actually wired right into the positive radio lead coming from the battery. That one isn't blown at all, but I figured there might be another one in the back of the actual head unit. I'll have to investigate when I dig into it next.
