Really the press constantly hammering at Corbyn 24/7 365 makes it a bit harder for them to exert pressure when they actually want to force an outcome. When they're gonna be unfairly treated either way and they're completely used to it, they can basically do what they need to. It's not like they could control the narrative anyway, and they learned that lesson a long time ago

I don't buy the anti-labour press bias excuse. People will point and laugh at how amazingly unable they are to gain any ground despite the Tories constantly defeating themselves.

The press are truly dreadful though, without their failure to do any fact checking on Brexit we wouldn't be in this mess at all.

Its absolutely incredible news. About 4-5000 people with CF will now be able to benefit from Orkambi and Symkevi - roughly 50% or so of the UK CF population. The reactions today from people in the CF Community have been amazing.

The priority now is to ensure that the new and upcoming 'triple combination therapies' (cocktails of several existing drugs, one of which 'Trikafta' was literally just approved by the US FDA yesterday) doesn't get bogged down in the same bullshit. People in the UK have had to wait almost 4 years to get it on the NHS. The tragedy is that it won't repair the lung damage already done - nor bring back the people who died waiting for it.

Guavanaut posted:

And great to throw at anyone saying "useless Corbyn what has he even done in the past 4 years"

Sorry, but I have to challenge this. It isn't actually fair to give Jez much credit here.

Corbyn hasn't actually done a huge amount for CF. I don't have CF, but work for a CF charity, and you would be surprised at the particular politicians who have actually given the most support to the access to medicines/OrkambiNow/LifeSavingDrugs campaigns over the last few years.

Its generally been a core set of Labour/Tory TIG types, plus Tom Watson. Yes, no argument that they are utter shitheads on most other stuff, but they have been consistent over the last two years in pushing for a deal on Orkambi and supported it well before Corbyn got involved. John McDonnell has helped out though, showing up for a demo or two.

Corbyn's only gotten involved very late in the process - in the last month or two, with the statement about access and compulsory licensing at Conference. This is about the same stage as Boris took an interest.

This is in not to say that his actions didn't help! It almost certainly added to the pressure. But the issue was already well established on the political agenda by that point and it was pretty much in the endgame phase.

The point an election becomes good for Labour is 'if a Tory government is in power'.

The establishment media is universally against us, the idea that we should give any effort towards having an election when their ammo will be low is fake, just like having policies to give them less ammo is fake, remember how Brownite nu-lab the-slightly-better-Milliband immediately became Red Ed? How his energy policy was Absolute Marxism, then T-May nicked it and it was suddenly pure sensible? Don't get drawn into this fake game that we can outplay or neuter the establishment structures if we're just super pragmatic about their rules, they will go 100% against us, and break their own rules to do so btw, whatever happens and their impact is not contingent on reality, it's blind machine gun fire. And let's also be loving clear every single day we delay is another day vulnerable people die from lack of care, wages vs living costs pervert in more bizarre evil ways, the everyday grim cold-blanket-over-the-brain of austerity drives more people into sadness and suicide, NHS foundation trusts sink further into debt so shareholders can afford more child prostitutes, every day we hold back on GE is another day of pointless suffering for the people who need us to fight for them.

Us winning or losing depends on individual members and supporters being enthused to campaign, it has nothing whatsoever to do with the wider media environment and delaying our chance to potentially win a fight for literally no reason is Guardian-IQ level thinking.

In addition to what EvilHawk said, you don't need to oppose on a FTPA motion, as it needs 2/3 of the house to vote FOR regardless of how many against.

As borisnghjosng intends to call an election using the FTPA which lets him set the date, I wanted to find out if parliament could still intervene so I had a quick look at the act:

quote:

The Parliament then in existence dissolves at the beginning of the [25th] working day before the polling day for the next parliamentary general election as determined under section 1 or appointed under section 2(7).
OK cool, so if he sets a date any later than 12 December then parliament would still be able to intervene.
Having a quick skim through the rest of the act out of curiosity I come across a bit that's amending another act from over 300 years ago:

quote:

In section 7 of the Succession to the Crown Act 1707 omit “or dissolve”.
And now that got me curious as to what the oldest act still in force is: turns out there still a few sections of the statute of Marlborough in force - an act originally passed 752 years ago.

And a whip to abstain is less likely to be broken by Labour MPs who might otherwise find being told to vote no unpalatable, such as the MPs who are concerned about seeming too remainy for their constituents. In terms of defeating the motion, noes and abstentions are equally effective. Seems like Corbyn has a knack for this politics thing ;)
