Yeah, that's a mistake, you're supposed to select both squares with the leftmost light in them. My bad, sorry everybody

mind the walrus posted:That's because Janeway is written as a bipolar psychopath. Actually that was just how Kate Mulgrew decided she had to play the character because the scripts were so wildly inconsistent that she, as a well-trained professional actress, could only conceive of Janeway's actions being the result of clinic psychosis.

I'm a PoC and longtime advocate for representation, so I do think it's p telling that a lot of the actual Trek community doesn't have hate for Janeway (she's usually put above Archer, if nothing else) but a lot of casual lady viewers tend to think of her/rank her as way better than she actually was. Somfin posted:Janeway did a lot of things wrong Never promoting Harry was pretty on-the-ball though, and while it's mostly because of bad writing (everything is for syndication!) I will give her credit for successfully integrating the Maquis into Starfleet pretty much immediately after getting stranded.

Archer was the aspartame of ship captains. He did the job but, like, ugh. Janeway had the roughest go of things both in universe and in show production, so I have a high respect for her.
|
# ? Oct 26, 2019 02:10 |

I wouldn't say Janeway had the roughest go in-universe. She had a hell of a load to carry but the actual difficulties were pretty minor, considering the circumstances. Picard and Sisko were comparable, if nothing else. Picard in-particular gets to know he's responsible for Space 9/11 for the rest of his life. Like it's really important to note that ranking Janeway low isn't because fans don't respect her or acknowledge her achievements, it's that the competition really is that strong.

I usually say Janeway had the roughest go just because she just straight up had no backup and no space base she could reliably hit up for supplies. Sure Sisko heading the Dominion war and Picard's ordeal were worse than any specific thing she got through, but at the very least once it was over they could just go back to earth and peel potatoes/drink a heroic amount of wine. Every ordeal Janeway survived, her reward was to keep on going and hope the next alien she meets has some poo poo to trade. The best Voyager episodes were when the writers actually loving remembered that instead of find-replacing the word "Kazon" into rejected TNG scripts
