There’s a current Hacker News thread that just seems to be a bunch of grandpas complaining about how hard it is to use an iPhone. Like what the gently caress?

I think my favorite one is some guy basically writing “I got locked out of my office so I borrowed another person’s iPhone and couldn’t figure out how to sign into Slack to contact someone to get inside.”

E: Actually it’s a tie between that one and another one where the guy said the last iPhone he ever used was the 5 and that iOS is awful because of how slow and non-responsive it is.

Dude, a good portion of that generation just refuses to learn how to use new technology. It’s probably just an age thing, but still. I deal every day with “I’ve never had a password” , “I don’t have an Apple ID,” and “how can I be expected to setup this phone?”

I’m even ok with the “I don’t want to learn how to work this” as long as you accept the consequences that, in a world orienting more towards using these tools for everything, you may occasionally be inconvenienced. But most expect it both ways: I want the convenience of a smartphone, but I want others to do everything for me.

So many gen Xers slipping into full conservative second they rolled over to 40 is about an object lesson of this as it gets because we have media (often of those same people!) claiming it would never happen to them that is easily accessible.

This is absolutely not a generational thing.

Anyway, there's no way I'm reading that whole thread but the first comment seemed reasonable.

Scroll indicators in particular have been a problem for a while and it's a bit off that they haven't made a return now that phones are hueg.

He ain't wrong. I know I'm starting to get old, but switching from the Pro Max from the S10 has been a lesson in ergonomics. Being able to map a quick down+left swipe from the right side of the screen for reachability reasons is the biggest thing I miss from the S10. The constantly hand shuffling of the wider and heavier pro max is giving me burning carpal tunnel on my thumb.

You can just swipe? Swipe right to get an archive button, left to reply, delete, or move.

To be honest I never even noticed that the bottom bar in the email app even changed until just now. The first thing I ever noticed in the new email app was the swipe gestures and it’s just intuitive for me because it’s the exact same gesture you can do from the inbox.

I’m aware of this Short cut, in fact I have it on! The ui and design of the phone still requires more hand/thumb movement than I’d like. Next time around I’m going to grab the smaller model.

I suppose this works if I have the "move message" set as my swipe-left action , but why make the change? You have hidden a button off screen, yet the bar on which it used to reside is still there, because you still have buttons, because they're essential UI components. It's also more inconsistency. If I keep swiping to the left form the inbox, the email will delete/archive, but if I keep swiping left within the message, nothing happens. It just bounces back. One gesture, same context, two behaviors.

This also has shown up in Gmail since I updated to iOS 13.

You can remove it, but as soon as you archive a message, it shows back up. :smith:

Yeah, all jokes aside, I went from the 10S Max down to the normal size 11 Pro precisely for that reason.

I just traded in my 7 and yeah the new phones are faster but it’s really the battery life I enjoy. Maybe pay the $30 or whatever for a new battery on your 7 and hold off, 2020 should be a bigger update.
