drat the scene where Paran gets sucked into Dragnipur's warren was incredibly grim and impressive. But good grief I'm 3/4 through GotM and I just... can't bring myself to care about all of the Darujhistan politics (the guilds, the council, etc.) It's like Erikson hasn't really given me any reason to get attached to anyone on that level. Kruppe? Sure, I'd die for him. But all of the other players from Darujhistan (outside of like Murillio, Coll, Crokus of course) are just very generic feeling. Overall I still love the book and I can't wait to power through the rest of it, I'm just sharing my first-time-through thoughts so I can read back later and remember how I was feeling. Also whoops bye Hairlock, haha

Darujhistan politics aren't really relevant at all, unless you read the ICE books. Mostly it's a backdrop for the viewpoint characters. The people you mentioned are the only ones who matter so you can devote your brain space elsewhere.

I actually liked Darujisthan a lot and felt like GOTM picked up once that city was introduced. Turban Orr and Simtal actually made things a little more interesting to me. JMO. I am inching forward on Toll The Hounds (12% complete). Memories of Ice remains my favorite and I am pleased to suspect that a certain someone(my cinnamon roll) will be returning.

I mean they've been built up over the series as a terrifying prospect; in HoC one who's been trapped under a rock for god knows how long renders a Toblakai, one of the strongest species in the series, a vegetable with a flick of her wrist. Then a bunch of them get creamed by this Shake guy who yeah is clearly a strong warrior, but it still came across odd. Maybe it becomes clearer in the last book.

Well, I finished GotM. The last book of it had some very confusing action, but I'm told he gets better at that. All in all, I feel like I know the characters pretty well and I'm looking forward to digging into DHG.

I'm also a massive fan of the scene where Shadowthrone and Cotillion visit the corpses of a couple of morons and Shadowthrone basically spends about 3 minutes just trying to make Cotillion laugh. He always makes me laugh. Also, Esslemont's prequel series is unforgivably lacking in scenes involving Shadowthrone's mother.

People keep trying to do DBZ/Bleach style rankings on who's a bigger badass, but Erikson doesn't seem to care because that's not his point. The point is that there almost always is a bigger badass, and people consistently underestimate the changes that progress brings by mythologizing history.

There are some obvious large spoilers (see end of Toll the Hounds), but generally there are so many details that it is hard to spoil them all. Which is an argument for rereading, since once you know the large scope, you get to focus on the small details. Also, Yedan Derryg is the meanest gay character in literature (Ringil, move over).

The end of TTH is a big one, and unfortunately I spoiled one of those events by accident when early on I decided to google "Anomander Rake", and the auto-complete suggested "Anomander Rake death". But overall yes, these are huge, sprawling books which definitely invite a re-read. I don't know if I'll ever manage it, given how much less time I get to read these days and the desire to, you know, read other stuff too. But if ever a fantasy series merits it, this does.

Make sure to read the Kharkanas books before tackling TtH again. Toll the Hounds So far my least favorite book of series. The problem is that there isn't much plot here. The assassins plot just fizzles out and some of the politicians scheme but it has little to none consequences. I've also read how people in this thread praises how Stonny is written, but I have to say that she was really poorly handled here. We never get to see things from her perspective and every time she interacts with someone the focus is on how bad of a mother she has been to Harrlo. She also remains passive during this entire plot, it's the men who drives the plot forward. I wish Apsal'ara had been given more time and character development, it was kinda fun how she's so obsessed with her own image that she 's constantly driven to do more and more stupid stuff.
