My mom is Chilean, but her father, and mother iirc, was a Spanish expat who was also a soldier under Pinochet and hearing her hot takes on Chile is a loving hoot. She was real young and living on bases when they got attacked or w/e so she's got a real axe to grind with communist or whatever menace it is. She's on a real tilt after getting owned by her Chilean relatives on facebook since she basically hasn't been in the country, outside of flying once or twice, for like 3 decades and must post her hot takes online. It loving owns lol. What I'm saying is, my homeland of Chile yearns for freedom. We must invade and clear out this rabble to bring peace, stability and democracy to the common Chilean.

just glancing through how the nyt was reporting the pinochet coup since it's topically relevant the nyt upon news of the coup and allende's suicide: https://www.nytimes.com/1973/09/12/archives/tragedy-in-chile.html quote:Any military coup is a tragedy, representing a breakdown of civilian authority and usually the collapse of government by consent. It is especially tragic for Chile, where sturdy democratic machinery had functioned, for many years and the armed forces had a strong tradition of keeping to their barracks. The Chilean tragedy will compounded if the report of President Salvador Allende Gossens' suicide proves to be true. In a country as bitterly divided as Chile has become during President Allende's three years in office, It will require tremendous skill and tact by the military chiefs now to avert widespread civil strife.
the nyt basically printed a pinochet press release about how great the middle class was now under pinochet and the great ideology of the pinochet military junta: https://www.nytimes.com/1973/10/23/archives/allendes-middleclass-foes-winning-power-under-chiles-junta-dual.html quote:Gremialism, as expounded by. Mr. Guzman, appears to be a combination of traditional liberal capitalism and a kind of corporatism similar to that practiced in Spain under Generalissimo Francisco Franco. some quotes that hilariously stood out to me on an article shortly before the coup: https://www.nytimes.com/1973/08/24/archives/opposition-intensifies-in-chile-as-legislators-vote-to-denounce.html quote:Some military men, particularly in the navy and air force, are known to be dissatisfied with the left‐wing Government and the general state of instability. But the commands appear unwilling to risk confrontation. shortly after the coup, the nyt wrote a glowing puff piece of pinochet. note that a lot of these articles consistently described the military leaders as avoiding politics and non-aligned, as if they were neutral political arbiters https://www.nytimes.com/1973/09/15/archives/chiles-strongman-augusto-pinochet-ugarte-man-in-the-news-served-in.html quote:Before he became the new Chilean strongman, Gen. Au gusto Pinochet Ugarte scrupu lously avoided politics. His silence was in keeping with the tradition of Chile's mili tary. comedyblissoption has issued a correction as of 02:09 on Oct 24, 2019 |

Why is that every loving gusano has to have the same "we don't see color in Latin America" bullshit argument? On an aside, you're going to hear a lot of bullshit in the next few days regarding Evo. All that you have to know about the legitimacy of the election is that Evo's government invited the EU, OAS, etc. to audit the results and the opposition set fire to electoral courts and ballot boxes.

Well, OAS made a big deal about how they accepted the invitation to audit the results. Then they can't because the opposition set fire to ballot boxes. It's hard to try to spin that.
