So uh... what's the smallest wheels you can fit on an 03 Outback then? For scientific research, of course. Also it'd look loving hilarious with 14s or 15s on it, between the ride height and the beefy stock tire size.

I really like the factory alloys, but holy poo poo tires are expensive* for it (compared to the Saturn). Exact same tires I had on the Saturn are $30 more for the Subaru, and those are store-brand tires. Once you factor in mounting, balancing, and road hazard, that's gonna put me around $600 for a set of tires (road hazard pricing at Discount Tire varies depending how expensive the tire is). And I'm sure as hell not running without road hazard on a AWD car, from what I understand Discount can usually be reasoned with about having to replace all 4 if they're decently worn when you have to road hazard one tire.

* Relatively speaking. I'm not used to store brand tires running $100/ea. It has some lovely Fuzions on it now, but at least they all match. Whenever they wear out I'd like to put semi decent tires on it, though the AWD and ABS will be a lot more forgiving than FWD + no ABS.

From what I was able to Google, yeah DT *should* work with you if one tire gets hosed, and the difference between a new one and the other three is outside of Subaru's allowable amount. I had that concern as well when I got the new tires for ours ($700 for Kumhos...)

You can put 15" wheels on a crosstrek with no issue (and this is what pretty much everyone trying to improve offroad capabilities does), they have 17" wheels stock.

So everyone should buy an underpowered crossover!

Pretty sure 15" Cragar Soft-8s will fit an Outback as well. The brakes aren't huge. I think the Crosstrek is the sole remaining Subaru with 5 x 100mm bolt circle like the previous generation Outbacks and Foresters as well. I saw a set of K02s on Method Wheels from a Crosstrek on FB Marketplace that I *really* wanted to buy for the Outback (guy went from a Crosstrek to a new Forester, so couldn't use them,) but $1200 and I'd have to lift the Outback. I'm still feeling out how my wife feels about a (more) lifted wagon...
STR, you might look at what a 17" tire in equivalent overall height costs - there are a bunch of OEM 17x7 Subaru wheels that will fit our Outbacks.

An 03 outback has 294mm front rotors and you basically need to stick with 16s. I think some people have fit 15" rally wheels over those brakes after doing some grinding to the caliper. You can downsize with just brackets and 276mm rotors from, say, a standard impreza or legacy and then any 15" wheel will work.

Sti became 5x114 in 05, Legacy, outback, wrx in 2015. Forester, impreza, crosstrek are still 5x100 as far as I know.

I'm trying to place the tail lights, but I can't. I'm almost certain they're from something else and just flipped upside down though. And then they just left the 454 completely stock with a loving mournful 230hp. This truck is actively pissing me off. Oh, and I can only assume it still has the factory 3 speed TH-400 trans. FFS.

The corners of the tail lights look too sharp to me to be from something specific. They might be upside down, but they look like they come out of some 1980s superfutureconceptmobile.

You don't necessarily want the smallest wheels, you want wheels that let you fit a common/cheap tyre size.

Use a tyre size comparator to work out the full list of tyres you can run across a range of wheel diameters while maintaining the same overall diameter, then work out the cheapest one. Buy used wheels to suit.

Don't forget aftermarket wheels usually use a replaceable (generally plastic) spigot ring to match the hub centre, so as long as the PCD and offset is correct, the fact they're "for" a different car isn't that relevant.

Didn't realize that the Forester was still 5 x 100, knew the Crosstrek was, and therefore the Impreza makes sense as well.
Looks like the Forester changed to 5 x 114.5 in 2019, though.

Shifting gears is all paddle apart from reverse which is the only gear selected by the big stupid middle control lever pictured despite it being marked with all gear selections. Park is the button UNDER the reverse lever just to the left of the start button. Manual mode to the right. It's pointlessly obtuse a setup.

Parking brake is yet another little flicky lever not shown in that image.

It’s one of the times that the base Cheyenne interior was much superior to the Silverado. My dad still has a 1988 Cheyenne 4x4 with A/C, tow hooks, cassette, and LSD the only options. Gutless 305 means you can pull without breaking traction.

In case it had to be said, use the right tools especially on something with such massive potential energy. Compressing springs with the right tool done right is safe, despite the scaremongering that I grew up with too.

Think about it- on a normal road you're going 45 (or more) less than six feet from vehicles doing the same in the opposite direction. Huge potential energy. But you do it every day and don't think about it. Electricians work with massive heart-stopping amounts of power, but as long as they use the right tools and procedures they can do it for decades.

It just seems weird that in this one specific instance every normally mechanically apt person is BETTER BRING IT TO SHOP BRO YOU DON'T WANT THAT PAIN

I know I'm late to this conversation but have any of you tried the method where you put the strut between two of the wheels you took off and then zap the nut off with an impact gun. When the nut comes off it slides the two wheel apart instead firing it at your face. I admit I've done it. The springs I was putting on were lower so it wasn't a big deal putting the new springs back on the strut. Also it's better and easier to use the spring compressor.

For anyone reading this TireRack has a service where they shave tires down. This allows you to just buy one tire instead of replacing all 4 for AWD cars.
