Crossing over from the pissflaps thread, but: my normally very Tory aunt in Tunbridge Wells is voting LD this time round and thinks that they will unseat the conservatives. So while I think it’s a good idea to vote Labour in *almost* any circumstances, if it’s a close Tory/LD race and Labour is very very distant third, maybe worth tactical voting on the grounds that 90% likely to be poo poo is better than 100% guaranteed to be poo poo.

That said, my constituency is super Labour, but I worry about LD effect there. Fingers crossed all that strategic ambiguity doesn’t bite us in the arse.

Tactical voting is bullshit, and the Lib Dems will almost certainly steal votes from the Tories rather than Labour this time. hth

e: 3/04; 11th March 2004: the Tories and Labour are level at 35% for the first time in forever. Labour would go on to win another majority the next year.

It's all coming up Milhouse lasses. Feeling very positive about our chances after two years of even the most ardent of right-wing papers being unable to hide how much of a shambles this government has been. The manifesto's going to be radical and Boris won't be able to hide from just how much most of this country loathes him. I've put myself down to help Labour out with the glamorous world of data entry cause the essential admin is always the stuff that people don't think about, I've chucked them £8 and I might chip in with canvassing as well. Tories might try to control the people but we are the people and we're in control of our own fates. Labour/SNP control/supply deal with a 2nd referendum leading to Remain and it's all back to the pavillion in time for tea and oranges.

For anyone that doesn't want to formally join the Labour Party for X reason (ie they are poo poo on free speech) or can't afford the monthly direct debit you can still get involved, google your constituency + momentum or + the local candidate and sign up to the mailing list for volunteering.

Don't do this? If you're doing a doorknocking session and a random turns up and they don't check that the person isn't in the Labour party there could be some pretty serious implications in terms of data. You are supposed to be data collecting on behalf of Labour, and the data you are given is given to you on the presumption that you are a Labour party member.

I'm not entirely sure of the status of registered supporters regarding the above but if you're going to doorknock you need to be member of that party.

In practice, no one cares or checks membership. As long as the person running the board is a member it's fine, especially since you're just talking to people and not noting any contact details when canvassing.

As a usual boardrunner myself I am saying do not do this, it is bad practice. I would be very angry with someone who turned up pretending to be a member who wasn't one because it puts me in a supremely lovely position. This is exactly the sort of behaviour that would lead to me needing to see anyone's membership card if I didn't know them, which is a huge pain in the rear end.

I'm not saying it's going to be checked but it is at very least a violation of trust and at most a violation of GDPR which makes everyone's life worse so don't loving do it. I would rather someone not help out than make me an accessory to someone's need to knock a door.

Edit: It costs £2.17 a month if you are in part time work or are unwaged. Even if you were only a member for a month that would be absolutely preferable to the alternative.

Nah, this is just the Lib Dems making a plea for the money that'll keep the top few in business (staff, interns) until the next election.
They know full well they can't get a majority; their donors know full well the Lib Dems can't get a majority; but as long as there's a solitary dangling strand of probability linked to a Lib Dem victory, they know they've got a supply of upper-middle-class graduates to staff their offices for the next 5 years.

Now there is the Doorstep App (actually a webpage) where labour party stuff is beamed to your smart phone so that could be even more GDPR (though I'm given to understand that the data is wiped from your phone within 3 hours or something). (Ed: but you have to sign in to membersnet with your LP sign in so you have to be a member to get it, though if you are canvassing in a pair with someone else then there's an issue).

I think it's just relatively common. I remember expressing my disbelief that a local shop in Ireland paid into my bank account but a restaurant chain handed me a cheque to my Canadian roommates. They both said that it was the standard!
