All of Israel’s embassies and diplomatic missions are closed as of today due to a strike by the workers at the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs That’s kind of a huge problem for anyone with a major issue so I’m surprised this apparent dispute with the Finance Ministry got to this stage

So IDF assasinated some Jihad leaders, allegedly, and now for the first time in my living memory, or perhaps the second time since the gulf war (I was 4.5 at the time) the IDF had issued a command to all the residents of the Tel-Aviv area not to take their kids to schools and kindergartens and to stay at home unless you're work involves providing emergency services. This is pretty drastic.

So the EU supreme court just decided products from Israeli settlements need to be marked as such. Of course a glance at the article comments reveals a lot of "but this will hurt the poor Palestinians who are employed there". Top notch argument right there. Discussing I/P in Germany is frustrating, there doesn't seem to be much of a leftist Jewish community so it's all framed by pro-Israel groups. I've started reading Tagesspiegel less and less because it's been especially bad about posting editorials about how mean it is that reports on Israeli attacks don't repeat Israeli claims of "they attacked first" in the blurb but only further down the article. That's the level of discourse in most news outlets it seems. I need to ask my friend at some point if he read Finkelstein's Gaza book I sent him - our last conversation on the topic stalled out because he straight up didn't believe me when I mentioned specific, well-proven war crimes. That seems to be the norm around here, passionate defenses with no awareness of non-Israeli sources and investigations. Even some explicitly leftist orgs are pretty openly shutting down genuine criticism. Is that a specifically German thing where people are entirely motivated by historical guilt over current affairs, or do other Euros and non-Americans share this experience?

The stated rationale is that the illegal status of the settlements meant that peace couldn't be achieved until Israel removed them. Since Israel was unwilling to remove their settlements, this constituted a barrier to peace in the region. Obviously the only solution to this was to recognise them as legal territory seizures since the US's classifying them as illegal was what was really holding up the peace process here and no other parties had any issues with them. Bing bong, so simple.

In terms of rolling in a load of troops and building settlements there as a strategy of ethnic cleansing, nah, they're not interested in it when the West Bank works much better for that for a whole host of reasons. Ganz's mandate to form a government expires tonight, so far it seems like 3rd elections are on the card, it's unlikely that Rivlin will give the mandate to a third MK (though if he gives it to Gideon Saar it might yield interesting results), so there's like an 80% chance new elections will be announced tomorrow, which means that they'll take place between february to april.

I don't think there's any hard limit on how long this stalemate can last, but given the nature of the impasse, it's kind of amazing to me that it's lasted as long as it has. If Likud leadership threw Netanyahu under the bus, or a few seats in Likud's power bloc flipped to side with B&W, then there would probably be a strong right-wing coalition within a matter of days. This gridlock is mostly due to a substantial portion of the Knesset backing Netanyahu, even in the face of impending corruption charges and his openly-expressed desire to pass a law granting himself immunity from those charges. So far, Likud and its allies have maintained strong party discipline, but Netanyahu's position is going to weaken somewhat as time passes, since his indictment is due any day now. Moreover, every new round of elections brings the possibility that an increasingly frustrated and annoyed electorate suddenly swings in a weird direction, leading to an upset of the status quo. Theoretically, there's no hard rule that prevents this situation from effectively lasting forever. In practice, though, it's not a particularly stable situation, and something could give at any time. It's impossible to predict how long it'll hold together, though. As a number of other countries have demonstrated (including, of course, the US), a far-right personality cult around a nationalist leader won't necessarily be shaken by a little thing like criminal charges.

Gidon Sa'ar, but I'm not sure he'd be willing to take this gamble and backstab Bibi. Far more likely he'll wait for Bibi to leave because of the legal issues in a while and then try for Likud leadership.
