Addamere posted:Thanks for this post! Am I helping robots or hindering robots by being polite to them? Would capitalism be more inclined to make stronger AI if I am rude to the uncanny valley robots? Go ahead and be nice to robots, I'm hoping companies will accidentally overreach and eventually make their products too sympathetic, such that the public starts pushing for some kind of regulation of human-like agents. Revolting against the invisible hand of the developer/capital behind a robot's friendly social interactions is valid too, but businesses may respond by just getting over their anxiety about products that assert themselves - "no more Mr. nice robot", essentially. We're slipping into sci-fi but I'm also hopeful about adapting machine learning toward social processes as something with potential to create more "organic" sociability in robots, rather than the purely instrumental kind you get from hand-crafted systems written by a programmer for some specific, self-interested effect. Interior life is a big part of the perception of intentionality, and machine learning creates at least some space apart from the direct hand of the developer.
