one time i fell for a lovely scam. i thought it was legit because it was based on the No Child Left Behind thing, but the short version is that tutoring companies could match underperforming children with tutors and collect payments on up to 34.5 hours of work with each child i bombed out of it, partially because they refused to take some kids whose families i couldnt contact off my book. if i didnt get them off my book they were going to charge me $17/hour for every hour of difference between the tutoring they had received and the cap of 34.5 so i could have been on the hook for hundreds of dollars, because i was mostly assigned to children whose parents may well have been non-legal residents who got scared when I, a white man who sounded white, called htem up. like two of them immediately changed their phones so they couldnt receive incoming calls after i left them a voicemail i managed to get out of it after being on hold for several hours and then sending them some angry emails

medical bill collectors are loving insane and i'm not talking about agencies that buy medical debt. i was outpatient in a hospital for a test right after my deductible reset and got calls from them before the bill even arrived in the mail. garbage people.
