Helith posted:So, the Channel-billed Cuckoos have arrived back in my part of Aus for their breeding season. Got woken up very early by their distinctive screeches. Channel-billed cuckoos game would be so much more respectable if they didn't scream ALL night. Be more like the normal birbs and at least let people have a chance of sleeping through the night.

The physics of this is really interesting. There is no chemical pigment in birds' feathers. They're just black up close. The color comes from the physical structure of the feathers themselves. There are strands spaced out in them that are transparent to specific wavelengths of light, while other wavelengths are scattered. The color is the transmitted/reflected light and develops deep within the feather, rather than at the surface as with pigments.

Today in just birds we present the South Island Robin. This glorious birb is found on the South Island of New Zealand, primarily in the woodlands. The pictures here don't really do justice to just how long their legs are, they look like they're hopping around on stilts. Living in a land that never really had any predators and getting accustomed to walkers means that if you're out hiking around in New Zealand there is a good chance you'll be able to get up close and personal with these friendly little folks. To the point where they'll hop up on your foot to get a bit of a better view of the ground around them when they hunt for bugs and worms. Having just gone hiking in NZ this was something that was put to the test and while they didn't hop up on shoes they did come over have a look for tasty morsels when the trail was scuffed up a bit while they were around. It turns out they're a big fan of people disturbing the ground a little bit as it makes it easier to find food. All in all if you happen to be on the South Island it is definitely worth getting out and about to see these little ones. NZ isn't just Kea's, Kiwi's and
