TofuDiva posted:I think you will have to do two things: 1) give her more appropriate targets in the same room, and then 2) give her all possible attention (including treats) when she uses the appropriate targets until she gets the message. Thanks for the advice! I think the appropriate targets are not the issue, but we'll try to redirect her to those and reward her. It's annoying because she never expressed an interest in my plants or scratching anything other than her regular scratchers (she prefers compressed cardboard most of the time). She just started trying to train us, I think. Lucky for her, she's very cute and extremely floofy this time of year.

I HAS CAT And yes sadly only 1, out of a litter of 7 a single kitten is bound to happen. She ate, patrolled the apartment, and is now playing with my shoes.

First day of CAT report: Welp I can see why the thread strongly suggests 2 kittens instead of one. My little fur-bomb has ignored all the actual toys provided and only finds straw wrappers entertaining. Sadly the wrappers get torn short and now both hands are bleeding. Bless her heart. Also she is a bit lonley, The only way I could get her to sleep was by setting her up in my lap and cooing her to sleep. She is also very fond of beds and needed to be placed on my bed lest she wake up. Thank goodness she has peed and pooped in the litter on her first try. She would refuse to sleep anywhere but my lap. Just as I got into bed as silently as possible and turned off the light, that caused her to get up and go into explore mode. She did a bed check every 20 minutes to make sure the Food-Giver was still there. It was all worth it when i was woken up with a face full of purrs at 8 AM. Shes also being a huge jerk about her food, shes eating it in tiny bursts, a small can takes about an hour to eat and starts to dry out by the time shes done. I hope this is just because she made a move and is still unsure of things. Despite this after one day she follows me, purrs whenever i pick her up, and is entirely satisfied with old receipts.

Len posted:Supposedly the trick to avoiding bloody stumps for hands is to yell when you get hurt as it teaches them limits. But I feel like that's going to vary based on cat because they're distilled chaos This actually does work, although a second kitten would help them learn how to be more gentle. The trick with it is to that the yell has to be somewhat exaggerated and theatrical. You want it to sound different than an angry yell or the cat may get the wrong idea. I usually would go with a higher pitched slightly drawn out "OWWWWW!" followed by sort of a sing-songy "Why are you biting me?" and it generally causes my cats to switch from trying to gnaw on my fingers to licking them instead. You yell and then stop playing with them for a little while. Also, I will suggest one other thing to Gaj and that is to play with your cats paws (both front and back) as much as possible while she is a kitten. Hold the paws, rub her beans, push her claws out and inspect/touch them. This is important conditioning and should make it easier for you to clip her nails in the future.

Despite a recent vet trip, I"m still worried about my 6 year old cat(s), the male moreso than the female. Last week I found an adorable, well-socialised kitten near my apartment complex. I immediately took him to the nearest vet where they pronounced him free of leukemia, FIV, fleas etc. I brought him back home and, not surprisingly, my resident cats didn't much like him. One of my students immediately expressed interest in adopting him but I've held onto him for a few days in case he wasn't abandoned and owners turned up, but no-one has. A few days ago, my male cat especially started to show signs of illness. He's sluggish, eating little (though using his box) and every so often will have a sort of dry heave while having lost most of his ability to vocalise, whether it be meow, hiss at the kitten etc. My lady cut has had a similar problem but not to this degree and has been acting normally for the most part while also putting up with the new arrival more gracefully. First thing Saturday morning I took my little man to the vet who said that he had a slight fever (1 degree) and that he felt that he had herpes and was feeling rubbish as he was stressed about a new kitten in the house. I can't really gainsay him, but the dry heaving, lack of ability to vocalise and lethargy have me really worried, and I can't imagine that something more serious isn't going on here. The doctor said to bring him back if I see discharge, which I do not, but given the symptoms I can't help but thin it's more than just feeling stressed and miserable. I noticed that the kitten was a little hoarse despite a clean bill of health and, as I said, my lady cat has been hoarse as well, and I'm wondering if the little one brought some kind of illness into the household. Am I being impatient, or should I be worried? I can't help but think that the doctor missed the mark here, but it's hard to gainsay a medical professional without evidence. Edit: I will add that during the trip to the vet, at the vet and on the way back, he was much livelier; the vet even had to chase him a bit. This adorable, lap-loving, claw monster runs a 4 hour sleep cycle. Every 4 hours Im assaulted with meows and purrs to my face for cuddles and she wont fall asleep anywhere else that isnt my lap. Pictured: Day 2 of Love Not Pictured: the bleeding claw marks she left getting up there.

So vets CAN be wrong and if you think you need a second opinion, by all means seek one out. That said even if kitten didn't have something like FIV they may have had a URI (kitty-cold) and passed it on, or your cat could just be stressing over the kitten like the vet said. You think that's bad, when Sam gets too stressed he starts peeing blood. It's happened three times now in ten years and he's never had crystals (I've gotten x-rays each time to be sure) and the vets just throw up their hands and say "welp, it's probably stress related just keep an eye on him and make sure he can pee." and sometimes they give me fluids to give him. CATS.

I'm filling out an application for a new apartment and felt it was only right to apply with the cats full names, Dr. Domino Fuzzbutt PhD MD and Princess Jellybean. The application asked their genders though which the cats didn't really answer in an understandable way so they're a male and female.

Aleta adores those little plastic baggies with extra earbud thingies. I have to reinforce them with tape and hide them when I-m not around to supervise, but they are her preferred toy for playing fetch. Luna loves rag rugs. Chewing them, bunny-kicking them, rolling around making insane faces....they are her preferred toy. We are finally throwing out her Sadness Box where she used to hide from the baby before Aleta got big enough to jump in after her, but she loved that box more than she will ever love me.

Sasha got her shots yesterday, she didnt cry on the walk there or during the shots themselves. The techs melted into baby gibberish at her cuteness. I do think the Vet trip did break her brain though, she stopped using her claws at all on my hands. Still chomps down though.

So Day 5 of Kitten, blood work is clean, booster and poop test in 3 weeks. Shes continues to be a purr machine and has the unnerving habit of sleeping right under my roller-chair, thus basically laying in traffic. Personally, I am going to be unemployed (planned) for 3 months. This means outside of going out with friends or caring for a sick parent I have a ton of free time which can be devoted to kitten time. I still follow a regular work schedule so I dont get fat(ter), but I still devote about 2 hours to playing with Sasha. So Im trying to figure out how to have her sleep at night for a good chunk of time or at least get her used to me not paying attention to her 12-8AM. Im doing this by mostly letting her do her own thing in the morning and then only really giving her high-activity play in the afteroon/evening. Is this ok or am I being a monster by not throwing a mouse dozens of times in the morning hours.

This is exactly why this thread so strongly recommends getting kittens in pairs. Your kitten has far, far more energy than you. Period.

Your kitten will eventually just get used to your sleep schedule and sleep when you do. It's not gonna happen right away, but given enough times where it tries to get you to play and you don't get up, it will get the picture. You may have to kick it out of your room and ignore its pitiful meowing on occasion. I'd also recommend some self-play toys, like those balls on tracks and things it can easily bat around the room.Gaj posted:Current kitten does take a roughly 6 hour nap from 12-6/7pm every day. It's going to need both that 6 hour nap AND the same time you sleep. Cats sleep a lot more than we do.

I purchased a motion detected laser pointer that goes through various routines when the cat passes it. I hope this helps in making the kitten tired since I’ll place it where she passes through most often.
