New Dawn Ray'd out today and going to their show on Sunday night too, super hyped about that.Fenrir posted:So I sat and listened to this all the way through, finally Thanks, it's good to be appreciated. And the vocals were a real sticking point for me, they were recorded with a shure sm49 that was really probably not set up properly, and I'm also really self-conscious about my voice so I buried it in the mix for that authentic Athems-era Emperor style, stripped pretty much all bass and then it turned out I liked it. But I was honestly tweaking the mix and re-recording some of that poo poo up until a couple of days before release. Also beyond compression, reverb and a delay it's pretty much just my own voice this time around rather than going in with some distortion.

I've never been huge into DSBM but have today found When Mine Eyes Blacken from New Zealand. The vocals are suitably haunting, and there's a song that's over 20 minutes so I'm sold. https://selfmutilationservices.com/album/when-mine-eyes-blacken I know DSBM is somewhat samey and that there have been recent posts with suggestions, but would gladly welcome any suggestions of similar artists.

my bony fealty posted:is this a good thread to talk about dungeon synth in? idk if there would be enough interest to sustain a thread of its own I was thinking about the same thing the other day. I think a dungeon synth thread would peter out pretty quickly but the black metal thread is an appropriate place as any to post about it IMO. I've been heavily into this one DS project called Charnel Oubliette recently: https://charneloubliette.bandcamp.com/

Oldstench posted the canonical list of classic dungeon synth so definitely start there, Depressice Silence II in particular is the ur-dungeon synth some stuff I've liked recently Fogweaver - out with the Lord of the Rings, in with the Earthsea https://thefogweaver.bandcamp.com/releases Malter - the sounds of Arthurian legend https://malfet.bandcamp.com/album/the-way-to-avalon Vandalorum - more historical inspiration than fantasy https://vandalorum.bandcamp.com/ Sombre Arcane - more than just synths, they even have vocals sometimes https://sombrearcane.bandcamp.com/ Chaucerian Myth - this dude is dedicated https://chaucerianmyth.bandcamp.com/

The problem with dungeon synth (much like black metal) is that there is such a low bar to entry that 98% of it is total derivative crap. I mean, dig what you dig, but just be prepared to wade through oceans of poo poo to find interesting and/or original stuff.

Someone in the main metal thread mentioned "Dungeon synth", I went like "hold on, what now?" and welp. Went to a dungeon synth show and saw Sombre Arcane who were really neat. they have a magic wand instrument that somehow makes music while being waved around. very fun, they're touring up the West Coast so see em if they're near you. Ildjarn's ambient stuff falls into the same general category I reckon. love THE TROLL DOME https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=SmVRMWR2o_s

So since this is now moonlighting as a dungeon synth thread I figured I'd throw out a little something I've been working on. It's a pretty amateurish affair but I'm happy with it so far, especially since it's broken like a 10+ year dry spell of not writing or recording music for me. https://mortwight.bandcamp.com/
