Yeah, there's two arguments against free movement. One is "they're foreign and/or coloured and dilute are national fabric", which is the racist (or at least ethno-nationalist, which is racism by appeal to bad philosophy) one.

This manifests as ethno-nationalist garbage a lot of the time but the debate over "what is British culture?" seems like a valid question and I'm not sure either of the main parties really do a good job in answering it. The Tories have a ton of reactionary crap about Empire and Glorious Brittane, but current Labour doesn't seem to have much of a cultural focus and the Blairites had the same bland liberal globalism in mind as Hillary 2016.

What would a socialist vision of British culture look like? How can you reconcile a concern with national culture with an international, outward-looking approach? These seem like important questions for dealing with the rise of rootlessness and feelings of displacement which are caused by capitalism and lead to fascist tendencies, but need a cultural as well as an economic solution.

But otherwise people seem to spend a shitload of money reinventing the train, or the tram. Light rail works and is used everywhere and lots of people know how to build and operate them.
Uses a lot of surface space up though. If you city's already built around trams then it makes sense to use them. If it's built around cars it makes more sense to go elevated until less people are using cars and then pedestrianize your surface space into £200m scam garden bridges public green spaces.

The council itself should be able to direct you to the legal requirements, but more to the point I think it's only if you directly work with elected officials you're affected. Obviously don't take that as legal advice, ask your council's legal counsel.

I mean you can do elevated light rail as well, and it can even be the same rail as the underground or surface system if you want it to be.

The underslung design makes sense if you very specifically want to change the station infrastructure (and just have it pull up at a platform at ground level before going back up again, rather than having an elevated station, which would be a quite specific issue to solve) but generally it's still just a marketing gimmick, it doesn't go faster or anything than any other train does because trains that go round sharp corners at high speeds aren't transport, they're rollercoasters.

Taking it away from Politics, but if you are in Yorkshire keep a very close eye on your local travel, and if you work / live in low lying land check the local flood gauges now.

Flooding is starting to happen quiet widely, with river levels looking to be around the level seen in 2007 / 2014 and the rain is going to continue all day, river levels are likely to peak tomorrow morning. Plan your route home now.

The new trains they've put on have made travelling this week absolutely miserable, all this rain won't be helping much. All the land upward of the valley I'm in was burned and sold off for grouse shooting. All summer the rivers been really high and I feel this winter will be quite brutal.

I'm not sure there is such a thing. You have two opposing forces here:
On one hand Britain isn't a nation-state, it's three nation-states plus Northern Ireland wedged into an Austro-Hungarian style monarch's territory. Most working class and socialist identities tied around the nation rather than the island, like the English identity that rose after Peterloo opposing the 'British' as the Hanoverian-Norman elite ruling from London.
On the other, in large part due to Britain's imperial past, there are a large number of BAME people who very much do consider themselves British (often with a modifier, like Black or Asian or Muslim), because their (or their parents or grandparents) British Subject status was what allowed them to be here in the first place, and in 2019 the "I'm English not British" lot are more likely to be just racist rather than concerned about a Hanoverian-Norman elite.

So there's that question, do we even look at British culture in the first place (this is problematic), or do we look at English/Welsh/Scottish culture and define BAME people by Black or Asian or Muslim (this is also problematic).

And whichever we decide, we then have to look at "what makes a nation?" The only non-racist definition I've been able to find that makes any sense is "language, faith, and custom", and since 1.5b people speak English worldwide and only 12% of the population identifies as any of the state religions (or former state religions in the case of Wales, or gently caress off Charles we're not a state religion bishops out in the case of Scotland) we're left with some quite nebulous custom to pin everything on.

Which is why any attempt from Westminster ends up looking like a middle management HR report, poo poo like "democracy; the rule of law; individual liberty; mutual respect for and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs and for those without faith" as if the rest of the world is the Iron Republic where people are both unfree as individuals and also ignore all laws and don't participate in groups.

I think more than anything, British culture is defined by what people from the outside see it as, and cutting off the alienation caused by capitalism without some island in the North Atlantic having to define itself by unified traits but rather by finding commonality in communities would be better.

The problem with overhead light railways in the middle of cities is where do you put them so they're reaching places that public transport should without huge bridges going everywhere. I guess you could put them at surface level and then have the roads on top of them, but that just sounds like 'underground with more steps'.

Electric buses at surface level is probably more practical than either for medium cities without existing tram infrastructure.
