I think VR is going to open up new questions in the "fantasy vs reality" space because of how truly convincing it is on a subconscious level. It’s this. Blade and sorcery videos make me squirm, as did that walking dead VR video. If I was in the HMD I’m sure I would nope the gently caress out. Bring on the big rear end VR Spiders and whatever, love it. But the “that person is really there in front of you” aspect that VR brings about is unsettling to me when I have to kill that person.

I dunno, even in VR the people don't look real enough to make me uncomfortable. Sure, they're all 3D and standing right there but they just look like video game characters to me I do feel really awful when I set an enemy plane on fire in IL-2, tho. Especially the WWI planes where the other guy doesn't have a parachute

The main reason I refunded Blade and Sorcery was the nausea but goddamn if the violence making me feel uncomfortable didn't also heavily contribute to my decision. Like Gorn at least is cartoony and over the top even if enemies are basically blood piñatas. B&S though, the enemies often have this weird scared look on their faces that just made me feel like a loving monster.

I got another one of those Oculus Consumer Surveys. This one was entirely web-based and meant to gauge interest on new features they are considering. It had one line about "we will show you confidential information", though there was no legalese or NDAs or anything. So I'll respect their confidentiality... eeeeexcept for this one picture I'm still gonna post because the artist is brilliant and I've been laughing my rear end off at it, and it is very apropos all the violence talk:

homeless snail posted:For me its less when things look like people and more how they move. And in Gorn they're big wobbly rubber babies that procedurally flop around where in B&S the animations aren't amazing or anything but they are an attempt to imitate reality. So that's the difference between ripping some Gorn guy's head off with my bear hands and lmaoing irl and grabbing someone by the neck and stabbing their gut until they fall over and having to stop playing VR for awhile. Move and talk I think yeah, facial animations really quickly put you into sympathizing with the thing. But if its got a doofy :| face that's unchanging and doesn't respond that helps. Course the zombies in Walking Dead only make zombie noises, but I think its something about how helpless they are? The way he can put his hand on a zombie's head and like hold it back and then stab it while it isn't really being a threat, compared to if he was being actively eaten or something lol. I'm planning on doing a mix of robots and spider tanks and very blocky people with fixed facial expressions in my project. The current block people I have now I have no problem shooting, although I'm probably gonna replace those with some silghtly cooler looking but still very blocky and cartoony ones I found on the unity store that look great. Also Crisis Vrigade has people but they're so blocky and expressionless I'm fine with it. Its just kids playing cops and robbers at that point. The guns aren't anything like H3 though. A friend of mine had the idea of doing squirt guns and putting it in a backyard setting, which could be fun, but splatoon already kinda nailed that and I kinda wanna do a Time Crisis / House of the Dead / LA Machineguns homage to my favorite arcade light gun games. Actually the extreme violence in Blade and Sorcery is fun, especially if you put on a loud Youtube playlist of Manowar and have a brutal barbarian power fantasy.

Metroid Prime runs on the Dolphin Emulator and has some degree of head tracking in Oculus Rift: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PBfJfTdxrg8 The Dolphin emulator has builds for Android, so it could be technically feasible to do a Quest-native setup for Metroid Prime. Because you can aim with the Wiimote, it is possible to translate the Touch controller input to that as well (apparently some special builds of Dolphin do this). Sorta..) so that covers my main gripe with VR mods, but look at the stuttery frame rate and the textures popping in... ehhhh

Yeah but before I just had to click on a drop-down and select 'vr' I didn't need to configure anything. The drop down isn't even gone I can filter by games or software the same as before. Its genuinely frustrating how often these UI overhauls just drop established features for no clear reason.

My issue is why can't you select categories with that dropdown? The GAMES dropdown right there would be perfect for filtering on categories, but nope, can't do that. Just games or software. Meanwhile categories have to be displayed as a list alphabetically. Why? Reasons! It takes literally 10 years for Steam to iterate on features and they're still half-assed. All while making absurd bucketloads of cash. I don't understand how a store UI can be so difficult. That Games / Tools / Software dropdown is basically never used. Put the categories in the dropdown valve you morons! Zaphod42 fucked around with this message at 17:53 on Nov 7, 2019 |

Payday 2 is now releasing new content, (which is pretty wild, 6 year old game development stopped on and now started back up) just dropped today. Foo Diddley posted:I love that you have a "cars" category Haha, thanks I'm a big gear head and I've got a sim racing rig so it made sense to me to flag those games special. Although the non-VR cars games get less play now, so "cars" is basically just a sub-set of VR games. The tags you can't see are "Active" and "Backlog" which are the ones I use the most. Also named so they appear on the top alphabetically.

Final level to be added to I Expect You to Die later this month: https://www.schellgames.com/blog/schell-games-adds-final-level-called-operation-death-engine-to-i-expect-you-to-die I love how they've built this thing up. So many VR games seem to have been produced with vast amounts of efforts going into making interesting mechanics work in an entirely new medium... and then they have about 2 hours worth of content and are basically dropped after initial release. These guys though have almost doubled (or maybe have actually doubled?? I think they've added three new levels at least as free DLC) the size of the game since release.
